Album Sales Plummet To Lowest Total In Decades

It's convenient: pay for music as you go...right from you laptop. I swore many times that I wouldn't download music, but I do...and I pay $.99 for each song. I don't need many...maybe 3 or 4 in a month's time.

I wonder if CD sales would increase if the labels were to go back to single-song cds...if that would help. I'd rather have the CD than an MP3 download anyday...I like quality sound.

Personal MP3 players have seen to that. Heck, smart phones can access and store music files.

Most younger folks and people who travel aren't using hard media like CDs. Sales of CD players are way down. The CD just isn't convenient anymore.

I still buy the CD's even if 90% of the songs suck, I like my hard copy, but I see they may disappear eventually so I need to stock up on them as I did with tapes, VHS tapes, vynil, reel to reel tapes, etc. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D Maybe this will br5ing the prices down on CD's ;)

The only thing keeping the CD alive was the car stereo. Now, they are all subscription or digital. Now, the last thread is the home stereo, which is close behind.

I am right there with you Art. Have iTunes, will travel.

Whenever I program a play list if I don't have the song I hit iTunes. Now, I also preview it to determine if I will use it again in the future and for most there is a high possibility; however, if the song is too ecclectic, not danceable, or cannot be used for cocktails or dinner, I don;t even spend the 99 cents on it.

If a connection is not available at the venue and somebody requests something I don't have, sorry about their bad luck.

I've dropped the subscriptions. I don't waste money on songs that will never get played anymore. Now, if Prime Cuts were to come up with a download as needed subscription then I might consider that.

Heck
even in RADIO we don't get CD's anymore!
we used to get all new music on a CD single...
and when the album was released, we'd get several copies for giveaways!

these days, it's all downloaded from our corporate site...
(another way to make sure everyone is playing a "safe" version)
so the only CD's we get are from local artists.

we needed kids music for our gig this past weekend.
didn't even bother to buy any CD's
cause the owner just hooked up his I-phone and logged on to one of their kids music channels and let it play!

I remember hearing Sgt. Pepper previewed on the radio and all of the hippies in SF calling in like everyone in hearing range was listening and was having some sort of communal experience and not believing their ears. Then it was a week of anticipation before the album hit the stores and I remember making my mother drive me 45 minutes to the big city where it became availible first in order to have it the second it came out. Then it was played over and over again. There just weren't that many "throw away songs" on Beatles albums.

Now, just knowing that I can get anything at any time in seconds has made it seem not so important to rush to get it. And there are so many choices that it becomes overwhelming deciding what I'm in the mood to play. The easy availability seems to have devalued the music rather than make it bought more often.

Possum...good point. Since music is so easy to get, it takes the sheer joy out of buying a CD in a store (touch & feel), although I still do it.

I doubt kids of today have the appreciation of new music that I had (have?). It all seems so disposable now - here today, gone tommorow.

I'll be BUYING Christina Aguilera's new CD today.

And you still can't legally download any Beatles track, which made me buy all their CD's again when the remasters came out last year. And I did not mind at all. The anticipation of hearing them in my Koss headphones anew was amazing.

But...it also makes independent artists much more accessible, so its a double edged sword.

CDs may sound better but for me nothing beats the convenience of getting practically any song you want while sitting in your underwear at 3am. :D

It would be nice if more cars and home stereos included a standard mini plug input versus the proprietary iPod dock BS.

Yeah, you don't see too many car stereos with the 1/8" adaptor anymore.
cripes, my car stereo still has a cassette player (and CD)
so I have considered buying one of those cassette adaptors with the wire and the 1/8 plug on it. probably don't even sell them anymore.

and Dan...
no more "mental pictures" of you in your underwear sitting at your computer at 3am....
PLEASE!!!!
:sqlaugh:

Wal-mart still has the cassette adapters - bought one online last week for $8.
