My wife would REALLY like a great point and shoot camera for our anniversary. I want a great starter DSLR camera... Budget is ~ $500.

Anything fit that budget?

EDIT.... One camera... A DSLR that has full auto mode for my wife.
 
Lisa got the Nikon CoolPix (P90)a couple of years ago and loves it.

I just saw a commercial earlier today for a camera it goes though the entire commerical and at the end it says the commercial was shot entirely on this camera.

I want to check it out and see what it cost.

Every digital camera we have owned takes really crappy pictures.

Looking for a DSLR that has a full auto mode. Basically a P&S for my wife, who really doesn't want to learn about how to use a camera.

I have two DSLR's, and quite frankly, I never use them anymore -- I use my Canon A540 P&S (older model), which takes better pictures quick and easy style.

The DSLR's are too big to carry around easily, and I've found they aren't that great for taking pics in a hurry, unless you want to spend a lot of time learning them first.

If yer like me, and don't have lots of time to become proficient with a camera, and like to carry it around easily, look into the latest Canon P&S's -- they take great pics, fit in yer pocket, and are within your price range :)
 
More than likely you'll need/want 2. We have a D90 that I use for sports, DJ events, vacation, etc. We also have a small Sony P&S that is really small that we carry with us everywhere. The D90 is a pain to take everywhere so I only take it when I really want to have that camera with all its features, etc.

So, I'd recommend getting one now and the other one when your budget allows.

I know this is a hair above your budget...but just look at the reviews and make a decision for yourself.

For a point and shoot...my wife bought a camera which I cannot use...and my uncle bought a camera for about $250. Turns out...which is cool, they are the same thing. Look at those amazing reviews as well. That camera is a Canon 120x. My wife has been taking a bunch of photos...and they turn out great when there is not a lot of movement.

Otherwise...if the camera needs to focus on a faster shot...it will do its best..but yet in my eyes...not good enough.

I am going to be buying a cam like zincs cam..the Pentax sometime in the next couple of weeks. I am watching deals to see what is going to be the best price around.

It's a Nikon D-Series...80 I believe. Might be a little more than Papa wants



I've been uing the Fuji Finepix SD1000 for a couple of years now it's a fine camera with advanced features but does the basic point and shoot stuff well too. Apparently from what I read the SD1500 is even better (wasn't available when I bought)

Here's a couple of recent pics I took the first was close the second was about 30ft away and the third about 100 ft away

Jeff... I don't think they are making the D80 anymore... you may be able to pick one up from someone who still had some in stock but that camera was gone before I quit Ritz back in November...

I think the D300 was the latest...

Papa.. be sure of the features you want... most of the DSLR's now have full auto... some have different features... example... some will do video.. some don't... some have higher ISO settings, some will give faster shutter speeds.. the cheaper the camera the less features it has..

DPReview is a good site for information on specs and what they think of individual cameras.. who has the sharper pictures, best color, etc..

I have no clue what it new right now... MusicDoc is still working for Ritz and would have more info on that...


Some of the last DSLR's I seen had flip screens... I personally love them... it allows me to hold the camera over my head ( shooting over a crowd ) or down low ( puppy level ), rotate the screen and still see the shot...

You can get a DSLR for around $500.. but like I said... check out the features... be careful where you buy... if you have problems make sure you have someone you can go to for help if you can't get a certain function to work..

Canon, Nikon, Sony (which will use Minolta lenses), Olympus, Pentax are all great camera...

As a new owner of a Canon Rebel XSi, I recommend... the Canon Rebel XSi! :)

Seriously, it's a great camera... a starter DSLR with full auto mode. I paid $550 at B&H.
This model was recently discontinued, but that's not really relevant... it's the lens that matters when taking pictures with a DSLR, not so much the body.

I've had my eye on the Nikon D3000 a 10MP DSLR $499.00 and the D5000 a 12MP for $699.00 at the local Wal-Mart.... just have other things right now that need to be met first before I can pull the trigger....

I have the Fuji 1000 mentioned above and it's ok but not much on low light photos.... great for well lit photo's tho....

Especially if you are running it auto or natural light. There are settings that you can adjust to make it better though
