What does anyone think of an emachine laptop ? At wally world they had one with windows 7 and a 250 gig hard drive for $298 I'm just wondering how well it would hold up to djing and karaoke

It should be ok for karaoke and/or DJ'n unless you plan on doing any sort of video other than karaoke....
I have VDJ loaded on my Netbook which sports an Atom processor and WinXP I use it as my lighting controller and a backup for my main laptop... it runs VDJ just fine but I wouldn't task it for more than karaoke and DJ'n video would basically work but be of very low quality and possibly have buffering like issues... but, I don't know as I have not tested it for video...

emachines tend to have very low end components, including integrated graphics, so don't expect much, especially since you can't upgrade a laptops video.
Anything sold by emachines today will kick hiney over the pair of 7 year old laptops that I use to DJ every week. The demands for playing music are really low compared to video.
I would be more concerned with finding all the appropriate drivers for Win7 than I would about using a emachine as a platform.

Emachines, Gateway, and Acer = the same company. I agree with what was said about Emachines generally being on the low end of the hardware spectrum that being said you should be fine playing music with it. I don't know what the karaoke requirements are but if it includes video I'd look for something with a separate graphics card.
I have found even with karaoke being a very simple graphics file it still eats resources and yes a graphics card with dedicated ram is definately the best option.
System requirements vary from hosting program to hosting program but, as far as graphics are concerned the cdg is set for 800x600 screen resolutions anything more than that is overkill....
Huh.... I've not noticed a great deal of resource issues with karaoke.... I've had it work fine on 700mhz pentium machines just fine.... and even these netbook pc's are way more powerfull than those.
I have used emachine desktops with no troubles at all...and even though they are an economy brand, would not be scared of them...BUT for my purposes, I am using Toshibas...great specs, and proven durability, AND you cant beat a Toshiba price on sale at Office Depot!!!
Buy a reliable brand, but spend more time looking at specs and hardware and you will do well...give the Toshibas a look though...

funny that you push Toshiba as that is what I have now I just saw that the emachine was on sale with windows 7 and 250 gig hard drive but i bought a tera gig external so my need for more space is taken care of
