OK, you DJs always turn around the questions and thus screw up the answers, so read carefully. Name the ONE Piece of equipment which you own, that you would consider to be the most important component in your rig
1. By Importance?
2. By Price/Cost? (A pair of speaker tops and sub-woofers do not count as one.)

I'd have to agree with Adam (gosh, I hate to do that) :sqerr:

I can plug a properly setup lappy into any rig, just depends upon what I wanted to accomplish.


I know you want to hear all sorts of cool gear techno crap -- but it all means nothing, if you don't have decent source material, and the tools to play it properly.

I can blow away a crowd with RS gear -- I could also suck with $50k worth of EV stuff. ;)

I'd love to blow sunshine up yer ass, and say having 50 billion dollars worth of live processing gear is gonna help, but it won't!


If you don't have a proper playback device that can store your music, and interconnect with any external sound rig -- you have nothing. If you don't know how to use said playback device -- you have nothing.


This may sound weird, but as Tolkien would say:

One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them


If I need to rent a sound man next time I'm in Houston, I'll give ya a shout... :sqwink: :sqbiggrin:

Problem is, how do you valuate a tool in the end chain? An amp may be worth its weight in gold at one event, but the sub wins at the next. A pair of sticks may be worth $2k at one event, yet only $300 at another.

The only thing that remains a valid valuation, is the source and the user of that source (as Jacob mentioned), so IMHO, that is the most important and valued piece...

For Me I will say "my External Hard Drive", it is the most important and expensive piece of gear that I have in my rig. Everything else can be easily replaced. Most of my music are promo reviews on MP3 formats so I cannot revert back to a CD for re-ripping. Even though the ones that were ripped can be re done, the time and expense to do so is phenomenal.
 
Ahhh...there is the issue.
In the original post you said most "important" component, but in your own answer you respond with your most "irreplaceable" component. Two entirely different things.
