I Have XP loaded on my office computer and was having a problem with my printer.

To make a long story short I reset to a previous time and when the computer restarted I no longer had any of my desktop icons and no start bar.

Even to get on Line i had to go through task manager to start IE.

Most everything will start and run through task manager but I can't start my printer from it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get my start bar/desktop back up?
 
Reset back to current, uninstall the printer drivers, and then reinstall them
 
How do I reset back to current I casn't seem to find the update file/program through task manager!
 
Sorry thunder it might be worse than you think

but you have drivers that run a printer not a program
the drivers will invoke to a program if its also installed but can still be used if you only have just the printer drivers

check your whole system for spyware/viruses etc just in case it may be doing damage

if you still cant get things working properly you may at last resort have to reformat!
only at last resort!

I think Dennis is on to something, your computer is acting just like my sister's PC after she plugged a USB Thumb drive that had some bad stuff in it. Cleaned things out and ran Spybot and worked well but I ended up doing a full format on it to clean things up and make it work perfectly.
 
Try system restore to the current date before you do anything else

Took it back to todays date and then set it back to the 24th.

Everything is working again except the printer. I will reload the printer now and see what happens, thanks Jeff!

If there is a printer there ( in control panel), should he uninstall it then reinstall?

What antivirus are you running?

I gave up on Norton and now use avast ( free)
 
Mantis trouble is Avast just does viruses, you still need to do a spyware scan as well

other software can remove that plus more

I am using Maleware!

System is clean the problem is in the printer (something to do with the memory module! It is going back to HP for them to look at it!)

The computer blanking was something I did when reverting to an earlier time!
 
Malware will not effect your computer as many are saying. Malware is designed to redirect your browser and ads -- no major harm is done by malware -- it's just annoying in serving ads.


Your printer driver, is probably replacing a newer system DLL, with the one it has. Your desktop icons and taskbar, are part of Windows Explorer (we called it Program Manager in the old days).

Either find an up-to-date printer driver, or get a new printer...

Good thought Rick but this printer has been in service for over two years and at $800 I hope it is in service for a few more! HP 2605DN! It has been working without a problem since purchased now it won't spool per HP (what ever that means)

HP printer drivers are weird. I have an HP All-In-One, and the drivers are always talking to the Mothership.

It sometimes goes haywire, so I delete the printer, and reinstall it, then it works for awhile again. I have to go into Printers, delete the device, reboot 75 times, and then start over.


I changed my security software, and now it always asks when a driver wants to communicate with the Mothership, and knowing how "well" HP works, I deny it. It's been working Ok since then :)
