I'm actually running the Ubuntu beta right now that's being released next month. Pretty darn polished in fact it's shaping up to be one of the best releases from an eye candy and usability prospective. Except for the new default IM client constantly crashing, which is understandable since it's a beta my machine is running a whole lot fast than with Vista.

I've got a windows 7x64 machine with an i7 920 quad core processor and 6G memory, running 6 folding at home sessions, 24x7, using it as my main machine, encoding video, and surfing the net. It's running at around 87% of it's resources, and I don't notice a thing. It's not lacking in performance for sure. My question would be, just how much further do we go before we've gotten too extreme.

They're talking 6 cores in 2010, and octo cores soon after. With hyperthreading, that's 16 virtual cores. With the current memory capacity built into a x64 system, there should be no need for x128 bit for home users. Possibly only for server systems IMO.

What will the next super computer have left to do??? ;)

Computer games will keep pushing hardware untill we get holographic, 3d, touch in the air, better than life, 100% addictive... you get the idea, it will never stop.
 
yeah but when they said the 256GB flash drives where announced you can imagine how far they can go...

That's weird Danno...?

My main rig is Vista 64, and when it goes to sleep, I have to physically press the on/off button to get it to wake up (it's a heavy sleeper) :)

My Win 7 machine wakes up whenever a truck goes by, and shakes the house, which moves the mouse ever so slightly.

I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but I think my main rig has a BIOS setting for handling sleep -- I'll make a note to check it next time I restart it...

Do dual core pcs really perform better than single core pc's?

I run Serato & Traktor...

i was running serato yesterday on my dual core laptop with the buffer level set to 0 and it was giving me sound pops, meaning that there was not enough ram to handle everything (2gb).

My single core 3ghz laptop runs it fine, no pops...

I only use these for DJ purposes and don't really have much running as far as processes..

As a general rule, yes, because Windows itself can run more efficiently -- but much depends on your software as well...

Heavily multi-threaded software, will see a better increase in performance on a dual core, than less heavily threaded software. Different threads can be run through different cores, instead of competing for time-slices on a single core.

i was running serato yesterday on my dual core laptop with the buffer level set to 0 and it was giving me sound pops, meaning that there was not enough ram to handle everything (2gb).

If you mean the ASIO sound buffering, it really has nothing to do with your available RAM -- the buffers are tiny.

More than likely it is a throughput issue on one of the busses on that computer, or another competing device on the same buss (for example, overloading your USB buss, which is slow to begin with, and has little bandwidth available)...
 
I'm actually enjoying Windows 7 more than Vista :D:D:D:D:D As Rick said, my Vista equipped machine takes a little bit longer when waking up while 7 is a bullet. / has improved over Vista the same as Vista improved over XP. I've found Vista and 7 are more stable than my XP machine. The future holds some very interesting things and some say it's just too much but some people say that more than 750 HP is ridiculous and I could just get by with a 60 HP econobox :D:D:D:D:D No thank you ;

Thanks, I think it's the USB Buffer that you can edit in Serato... So if I have an external HDD (2.5") and serato, which itself is only usb 1.1 connected something else is fighting for resources available?

Now I do plug in the serato soundcard on one side of the laptop and the hdd way on the other side.. does that not matter?

More than likely, the buffer options in Serato, are for it's own internal buffers, or the ASIO driver buffers -- I know of no programs that can edit USB buffers -- the OS handles that.

As to USB, every computer is different in the number of root hubs, versus USB ports connected to a given hub. I put a link on here somewhere, to a USB device viewer, that will show you the root hubs on your computer, and which devices are attached to them.

Then you can match that up to what you have connected, and spread them out more evenly.

FYI - single core CPUs are history, quad core CPUs are coming to mainstream laptops next month!

I guess I don't get it.. I don't do any gaming or too much graphic dsign work, all I want to do is get a good pc that can run both Serato Scratch and Traktor Scratch with no hiccups...

My dual core cpu 2.0 (I believe) - sux (Lapptop)

My single core CPU 3.0ghz - No Problem EVER!(Laptop)

Both are fresh oem xp installs, both have very few running resources, both have 2gb of ram, both have dedicated video cards built in...
