OK, heres the deal, I need a general idea of a price to quote a college for live sound for approximately 1-2000 students outdoors. I'm not a moron, I realize I'd be renting a small array for a show that size, but I need a starting point of what to expect to pay to rent a rig like that. I'd like to make $2300-2500 profit off the event. Throw out some numbers!

Well it's basically a concert for 2000 college students at the University of South Carolina (party school of the south), showcasing 3 bands and a headliner on a saturday in December. I don't know what to expect to pay for a rig that can handle a crowd that size. I know i can handle monitors for the bands with 122i's, and that I have a board and snake capable of meeting the requirements of any real band, so i'd be looking to rent a capable sound system along with probably a Driverack or some other form of processing for it.

I wouldn't do it -- if yer even asking for prices, it's beyond yer range, IMHO.

Pass them on to the pros who do those sized gigs, and maybe you'll get a kickback...

I'm asking for a quote on a sound system, I've run shows this size before, I'm just looking to add a sound system larger than I have in the past.

Give Val a shout! Split the loot and you would have someone who knows what they are doing.

I don't mind splitting the money lol....but i doubt they're gonna come to SC for a show that will likely pay at or under $10,000

Just Ask! Yer never know.

Yeah, I would not hire a DJ for a show like that. I work with a production company for gigs like that with 2 sound engineers (one for monitors on an old AH Spirit and a Midas Verona for FOH) 3 roadies, plus everything else they might want (twin truss moving light rig, video screens with full switching and spanning capabilities, etc). Here is a pic of a small ballroom show we did. This one was only 5 for setup, 4 to run the show, 5 tear down. This was for a couple of speakers, a few hands, and about 1000 people.

Val and her company are not just "any" DJ. They do gigs like that on a regular basis, hence my recommendation. What other DJ on here do you know that requires a semi to haul gear to a gig?

This sounds like beyond a Val gig -- I would give it to a production company, that is well versed in big college events.

No offense to Val and Steve -- but I wouldn't go in without a full array for a concert hall, dedicated to bands. Yer gonna need more than one semi...

I dunno, we have done 2k gigs with bands for one full semi. But that was with no lights, video or anything, just sound.

Three things!

number 1. 2000 college students is not really that many, and won't require as much gear as you may think.

number 2. Call up a couple of sound companies in your area and ask them what they would charge to setup a sound system for around 2000 students in an outdoor situation. my bet is if they are hungry you can get them for under $1500 maybe even lower.

number 3. Don't look for a college group to pay the money you are thinking of asking, at the most they are going to pay maybe 3 to 5 grand!~

Running live sound and playing pre-recorded music are not one and the same - if you do that, my recommendation would be to hire in an engineer to mic things properly and run the boards. Its not as simple as plug and play if you're going to do it right, and anyone who IS qualified to do it and do it right would already have an idea of the system needed. Not trying to be negative - just sayin.:sqcool:

Your question is a little vague. I'd need to see a rider for the headliner, as well as # of pieces is the openers. Lights or no? Staging or no? Backdrop or no? Do they have their own FOH ops? What's event security? What is event schedule? Not enough information to quote. Also, you might see some pretty large differences in 'what you can expect to pay' coming from all of us and what you will pay in your area when you find something available. Depends on how busy the production co's are and how much they like you.

If you're looking to profit $2000+ over what the sound system rental is, you'd better be one helluva FOH man. They'll find a production co for a lot less than that. Around here they'd hire the University tech services for an event that size.

Yeah, most high end sound guys around here get $1500 a day and that is for guys who have been mixing on the road with A list bands and touring Broadway shows. Mid level guys (regional tours and B level bands) get $800-$1000 a day. They guy from the production company (still usually a pretty good engineer) gets $500 or so.

I am surprised USC doesn't have a sound guy if it is a University sponsored event.

Val hit it right on the head...In my area a show like you described would be $500 tops including the gear setup and teardown
