A thought from one who studies American history every day...
Columbus was an ass -- did more harm than good (not sure he did any good, come to think of it).
If you really wanna celebrate America -- take a looky see at Thom Jefferson. Ok, he slept with a couple slaves (who he freed) -- but he wrote the book on democracy, was one of the architects of dissolving slavery, and pretty much set US on our course (he even knew how bad it would get).
If anybody in the history of the US should get a holiday named after them -- it should be him.

I personally feel that we should change Columbus Day to Obama Day (as soon as we switch our monetary system over to the Euro)
