Usually Monday is a "regroup from the weekend" day for me. As this past weekend also included a Sunday event, it's now Tuesday, I'm in the process of resolving something that effected me this past weekend, in order to make sure it's will not effect future events.
I have a well-worn Audio Technica wireless system (ATW-R10) - I have a pack with a lapel, also a headset, and also a handheld on the same frequency. When it's working properly, it's a terrific combo unit. The last three times I've used it - issues! I had written off the first as: simply not enough time given (1 hour room turnover) for me to properly soundcheck the mic, I wrote the second one off as a fluke (I had a BUZZ in the audio chain that came from this microphone - I resolved it with a HumX ground loop remover). I figured somehow I had bad power. Later that same night, I used the AT handheld and had similar problems to what I'm about to describe. Three times? I don't think so.
Sunday, I was using this AT via lapel on the groom, while the pastor wore my Shure wireless lapel mic. When working properly, I generally prefer the sound of the AT, which is why (even though the head is bigger), I put the AT on the groom. I was setup to the side of the ceremony, probably about 50 feet from the altar. I have used both of these mics. at this very venue before, in this very same manner, with much better results.
Here are audio snippets from the wedding, to illustrate how it sounded:

The AT seemed to be "gasping" and turning itself up (into feedback) and then back down, making it very difficult to get a good level. I didn't look at the receiver to see if it was bouncing from channel to channel or not.
From the audio and the descriptions, can anyone suggest what the issue might be? I'm ready to send for repairs, unless there's something more I can do to diagnose or resolve this problem (these problems?).
