At wedding receptions this year, we've seen an overall trend of more guests requesting old school hits. In fact, we've found that old school hip-hop has been going over the best with dance crowds. I've found that I tend to start with disco and go into newer pop much later in the evening, but old school hip-hop has taken over the majority of the requests.

I'm not just talking about "Baby Got Back" and "Ice Ice Baby." I've had requests for "Shoop" by Salt-N-Pepa, "Dazzy Dukes" by the 69 Boyz, "I Like to Move It" by Reel 2 Real, "Tootsie Roll" by the 69 Boyz, "Funky Cold Medina" by Tone Loc, and the "Humpty Dance" by Digital Underground. Other songs that have gone over very well include "It's Tricky" by Run-DMC and "Push It" by Salt-N-Pepa.

I'm just wondering...is anybody else seeing this sort of trend in your area?

At Private gigs yes. In the Clubs its all the new stuff.

It is awesome. Clearly one of my favorites.

I play Sugar Hill Gang "Rapper's Delight". Everyone seems to know all the words still.

"She's a Bad Mama Jama", "Flashlight", "No Parking On The Dance Floor", "White Lines" are all good ones to have in that rotation. Sometimes "Atomic Dog" works too.

I'm not big on todays rap and hip hop, but the old school stuff was so different and so danceable. By the way, I love big butts and I cannot lie..............................

Funny thing is 10 yrs ago it was the 80s til now and the natural rotation to oldies now becomes later Eighties and the Hip Hop of Old moving into the nineties. Just wait ten more yrs and we will be playing Soulja Boy again.

God I hope you're wrong about that....

I've been seeing it more here in Eastern PA!
"Apache" seems to be huge all over again...
and I've had more requests for "It's Tricky" in the past year than I did when it was popular (the first time)
thought it was a fluke, but I guess it's a "trend"...
Then again, had the same thing with a DISCO resurgence a while back.
