Computer backup company

Me and the wife had the unfortunate incident of having both of our main computers crash. I had most of my computer backed up but my wife's...not so much.

Anyway...I've heard of online companies that can back up your computer each time after every use for a yearly fee. Does anyone use one of these and if so...which company?

FWIW, I was reading about backing up your computer online and the law. It says that to get your files backed up online all they need is a Subpoena . To get the files on your computer they need a search warrant. Those are two different standards..Subpoenas are a lot easier to obtain.

Not that your doing anything illegal just something to think about for privacy concerns.
 
i use mozy. seems to work great. I set it to back up every 3 hours if changes have been made. Can't really say why it's better than any other though. and thankfully i've never had to restore yet so can't speak for that
 
Acronis $20 on ebay, external 500GB USB hard drive $89, incremental backups don't take much time at all once the drive has been backed up the first time. Get into a routine once a week or so and it's easy. I know you said online, just wanted to offer another option.
 
I'd second Acronis. All my machines have a WD Passport connected, and Acronis does a full image backup daily. HDD goes bad, just pop in a replacement, restore the image, and good to go :)

I also have redundant NAS RAID arrays, that automatically back themselves up as well -- but that's a bit much for most people, unless you need to have access from anywhere on your network.

All my actual data (other than music and videos), gets synced to a flash drive daily, and I carry that whenever I leave the house.



As Dan touched on, I wouldn't use an online service because of the security issues -- I'm not putting my source code and business related emails on the internet..

I've actually got an external HD but being so busy with the biz and my kids I forget to do it. That's whay I was looking into a computer service that does it automatically. Plus it would make it easier for my wife too...

You can easily automate Acronis -- you can do it as well with MS SyncToy, if you just want your data.

Pretty simple to set them up for schedules. :)

I would think there would be a per computer charge. I would suggest setting up a shared drive and backup the other computer to it, and then put the main computer on the online system. Setup the second computer to copy files that have changed on a regular schedule.
 
If you had a Blu-ray dvd writer the dvds are 25GB each
why not back them up and put them in a safe

and keep the mp3's as data on dvds?
