Seniors Event..... Need suggestions for Activities.

Hey Gang,

I will be doing a "Seniors" event at a Retirement / Assisted Living Facility next month with a 50's theme. Since I got my start DJing for an "oldies" chain and stayed there for 5 years, I have no problems with the music for the event.

Since I haven't done one of these for a long time, I am interested in are some new ideas for games / activities to do with them to keep them involved for the 2.5 hours I will be there. Target age group is 68 - 90 years old. The event is Indoors.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Glad to hear that you're serving seniors.
A limbo contest is probably not a good idea.
If it were me I'd throw in some 50's and 60's trivia with small "token" prizes between sets.
 
Play "Name That Tune" for prizes...doesn't have to be anything big.

Also, do the old "Guess how many candies are in this jar" game...the person closest to the actual number without going over wins the jar of candy.

Have a dance contest with props...you'd be surprised how many people will do this. You pick a song to go with the props...the most creative dance wins. (Remember...these folks are older...not dead)
 
If your giving away candy, make sure it's sugar free or the person who wins it has no dietary restrictions, or swalloing issues. If you have a local avon or mary kay sales person maybe they would give you some samples, the ladies love those, also small bars of soap (hotel size) and individual packs of tissues (easier to hold)
 
hey guys these are great ideas. Keep em coming. Also add some unique message you expect to achieve during a show perhaps like your artist selections you feel will be most appropriate for this type of group. I still use big band and 50's and 60's stuff but as we move towards the next decade I find even the local oldies stations are mixing in the 70's classics as well. Bread, America, ELO etc.

one for how many children, grand etc etc

Here's something I've done in the past at "retirement communities". Go to a dollar store and buy 10 or 20 items. The cost is minimal and whoever is hosting or the activities director will probably pay the $20. Get some playing cards, crossword puzzles, large number calculators, keychains etc. When you can give away 15 or 20 items it gets more people involved. Another way is to get a sponsor or sponsors to donate items or donate $25-$50 for promotional purposes. Then hang their banner on the DJ table etc.
 
One fun activity I did recently at a party I did was name the artist. At first I was resistant because I didn't think it would go over well. Everyone is familiar with name that tune, but not name the artist. It turned out great. It allows you to play more of the song which I enjoy if it's great music. We selected some great old one hit wonders and a few less well known but great songs. With older folks you might want to throw in a few easy ones like Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Doris Day, Al Martino etc.

Another activity you can do is pass an item and stop the music. The person either wins or is eliminated depending on how you run it. Then give away one of the dollar store items. This is a fun but not physically demanding activity.

Another activity is to ask for dancers. Only a few couples will come up. Put on a great dance tune-not too fast-and then thank all the dancers, get the audience to applaud and give them each a dollar store item. 3 couples, you give away 6 items.
