using a microphone effectively?

I'm putting one together. I can offer insight into presentation, technique and more.

Just let me know if you think something like this would be useful.

Thanks,

Dave

Great idea Dave...I've worked with people at different events who have no idea how to hold or speak into a mic. Even if you go over the procedure with them before they speak into it...they still get it wrong because of nerves, etc.

I think it's a good idea Dave.

At 1:30 today Randy Bartlett will be giving one such seminar here at the summer show - The Microphone – A Tool Or a Weapon.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm most likely making this available to anyone, anytime on the web. It should be readily available to people WHEN they most need it, in a podcast so they can listen on the way to a sales meeting, party of wedding.

Any other thoughts?

Dave

ps. Randy WHO? J/K

I've seen Randy's little side show presentation. After he's done cutting up and ripping apart other DJ's it turns into a personal opinion presentation as appose to really using mic techniques. If he's changed his shtick then I stand corrected. But then again he uses that platform to sell his DVD's as well.

If it were really about technique ie: distance, mic control, volume levels etc, I think it would be a plus. I say go for it.

Ron,

It would be totally personalized to the individual. Each person's speech pattern is different. It's really about being an effective communicator and using a mic properly. I do voice over work around the country so there is a specialty aspect to that and some of those ideas come into play here also.

Thanks,
Dave

Now that's what I would expect and enjoy.

Randy started out using a video of Andy Garcia, Bill Crystal etc announcing at a baseball game. Wooptifreakindo. He then went on to show some video's of lame DJ's announcing wedding parties and lambasted them. After he chewed them a new @$$ he talked about his 1% solution and DVD sales. He took questions but if anyone had other opinions or ideas he more or less just blew them off. Not impressive what so ever. Since he can't even produce his 1% monthly newsletter (it was over 2 years between publications) I don't think his message has the impact it once did.

Sorry to burst this bubble but this is the sh!@ that is being put out and promoted by the ADJA and others in the so called elite cult and called education. It's basically just sales for their friends. It would be refreshing to learn actual techniques and not just "look how much better I am so buy my stuff" seminars.

See what happens when I get carried away. Dave, as you described I would love to see this type of presentation. How come you're not in one of these fundraisers, membership driving, wedding shows? Oh, that's right, you're from New England.:sqwink:

Dave,

I think it is an excellent idea, I don't know how many times I have tried to get DJs to stop cupping the mic, shoving down their throats and talk in an inteligable manner.

Had a DJ at the club and every time he was working you couldn't understand a word he was saying. Cupped the mic shoved it into his mouth had the EQ setup with the mids all the way down and lows and highs all the way up (yes the smiley face EQ on the mic too)

I would show him how to use the mic set it up for him and is vocals were clear as a bell the next time he would work it would be the same thing.

Good DJ but lousy mic skills, since i needed someone who could make announcements as well as DJ I found someone else!

Yes many DJs could use, Do need, and should heed what you have to say!

Speaking of that Dave

if you need some ideas that are also funny you should ask

here is one that I see at nearly every event on what NOT to do with a Mic
that is

when you give a mic to someone they SCREAM into it to see if its working with "1-2 Hello can anyone hear me!"

now if I got a $ for everytime that happened I would have retired years ago lol

I always like to see new techniques and such and I'd be game unless....

1) You use it for personal propaganda and you belittle djs who just don't get it.

2) You really were just trying to pass on some knowledge that you have learned over your years and experience with the mic.

So if this is your desired effect...yup sounds good to me.
