I was vaguely familiar with the name, but couldn't tell you who he was or what kind of music. I was on amazon looking for different types of music to round out my library and since a lot of what I do is with older crowds I was looking at Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Jimmie Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, The Clark Sisters etc. I stumbled across Woody Herman. Wow, I love his stuff. Some is big band some is Jazzy, but it's all good. Ended up buying three of his CDs. I can see using it more for cocktail hour or during dinner, not so much during dance and of course only some of his songs. The rest I can just use on my personal mp3 player.

Used to play big band in college. Love all that stuff.

Keep in mind that today's 70 year old was 20 in 1959.

Big Band is nostalgic, but if you don't have some serious swing dancers out there you might miss the mark a bit.

Doesn't hurt to have on hand for your own enjoyment. After a gig I'd much rather listen to this stuff than Boom Boom Pow these Chickens be jockin' my style

or whatever they say....

Don't forget Count Basie, Glen Miller, or 2 Live Crew

Don't forget Duke Ellington!

I did a 50th anniversary a few years back. I played all this stuff and new to a crowd of young and old. Foxtrots, cha chas, waltzes, etc. It was a fun event.

Duke Ellington is another one.

I believe I will eventually have a larger selection of these great, classic swing, big band, big band Jazz etc. music than most DJs. I truly love it and will take every opportunity to play it. I was booked for New Years a couple of months ago and I'm going to get a chance to play lots of this stuff to that crowd.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one liking those old tunes and players.. :)

Don't forget Jimmie Lunceford, Cab Calloway, The Dorseys (Tommy & Jimmy), Artie Shaw, Billy May, Gene Krupa, etc. etc....

Also don't overlook the Latin big band sounds either.....Chico O'farrill, Tito Puente, Xavier Cugat, Desi Arnaz, etc....

La Banda Gorda, love that Latin big band Merengue. I have a very large Latin music collection, Merengue, Salsa, Bachata, Cumbia and who knows what else.

As far as I know I'm the only one in my area who sings Cab Calloway's "Minnie The Moocher", what a great song. I also sing "Puttin' On The Ritz" which Fred Astaire sang way back when movies were made in black and white, before ginger Rogers I think? I do Bing Crosby "Swinging On A Star" too, those old folks love it.

If you like Woody you're gonna like Arthur Prysock, his brother Red Prysock, Buddy Johnson and Tiny Bradshaw. I play for mostly older crowds now and these artists always seem to get the folks tapping their feet.
