yo yo yo this is your boy DJ WinGs

I am trying very hard to get somebody to get me into a club or a bar so I can make a lil bit of money.

People tell me that I got enough skill to get on a label so I went ahead and produced demos. IF anyone knows any clubs or bars I can get into then that would be helpful, or any competitions that would let new DJs get in the game.

yo yo yo dog, getting gigs is the hardest part of the biz. If you have talent and skillz you're going to have to go knock a bunch of doors, talk to a lot of bars and clubs and maybe do some free gigs to get your foot in the door. With a little luck and a lot of shoe leather you will get some jobs. Persistence and tenacity are as important as talent and skill, maybe more important. If you don't have connections it can take a lot of work and some time to get established. I'm telling you all of this based on my personal experiences.

There I fixed that for ya... you wouldn't want young one here to think you weren't hip Grandpa now would ya.....

He's right though.... unless there are a ton of clubs in your area... chances are most will already have DJs at their disposal and they ain't gonna pay diddly squat to a new guy with no following... build up your rep first... do a little foot action and maybe even some mail advertisment... but for sure go visit your local clubs and bars get to know the staff and management.... word of causion.... loose the "Yo-Yo VH1 Where Are They Now" vibe when meeting with potential club owners... they'll know your hip to the scene without all that garbage... but, when you do get in if that is the type of DJ they are looking for then play that persona to the hilt...

Two very sound, very spot on pieces of advice!

As already stated:

Foot work first

Demos if you are asked (don't pass them out like candy)

Professional attire and language when talking to the club and bar managers.

Save the shtick for when you turn on during the gig!

Plan on giving up some time without pay (trying out during the shifts of the established house DJs)

Each club is different on what they are looking for in the form of music (sometimes each night is looking for something different) so learn a wide variety of music genres (you never know what a club is looking for so become well versed in several genres it will increase your chances of landing a gig many times over)

BTW Demos should be done with 25 to 35 second clips of songs mixed together (not complete songs) Managers and talent booking agents lose interest after three to four minutes so keep your demos to 4 minutes or less but over two minutes!

Oh yes and limit the BS chatter on the Demos, do an short introduction and nothing more! When I was booking for the club I immeadiately canned the demos from chatter boxes, Also canned those whose vocals were not crystal clear on the demo!
 
also go look as you normally look for work
spend on ADVERTISING is the bigest

contact and work for other Dj companies (sometimes for free to get your foot in the door)

remember its not as easy at it seems to be to get work if your a newbie
