Altman vs ETC Fixtures

Looking for the differences between the following two fixtures for gobo projection:

1- ETC Source Four Zoom 15-30

2- Altman Shakespeare Zoom 15-30


Did one come first, and the other followed along? Pros / cons of either piece?
Any Altman / ETC dealers here also?

The Altman 360Q came along first in the early to mid 90's. It is old technology.

Altman Pros:
Low Price
Decent Light Output

S4 Pros:
Better Optics for more Light Output
Better Optics for sharper gobo focus
Better reflector for more light output
More efficient lamp (575W vs 750W)
Interchangeable barrels for different focal lengths

Ben at NLFX is a dealer I am sure. Well, reasonably sure. I sell both fixtures, but am not an authorized dealer (don't do enough volume).

Skip the zooms though. It messes with the optics. Really gums up the works.

For the price savings it is not worth the Altman.

So instead of going with a Zoom model, you could carry a couple of different barrels? Any idea on what the different barrels would cost?

I have a quote on both the Shakespeare zoom & ETC S4 zoom. And even a price on a used S4. How time consuming is it to change barrels?

It takes about 30 sec to swap barrels even in the air.

Avoid the Shakespeare. Too heavy for your normal use.

I would just get a S4 with 26 and 36 degree barrels.

Should be about $450 for the package.

Thanks for the info. I visited a local AV company yesterday & the sales rep was saying that they will sell their current gear (as used, of course) for $220/each...which includes the current lamp & plug.

I wonder if that could be either a 26 or 36 & buy the other barrel?

More to think about....great
