Thespian Dance - Ideas?

Hey all!

Yes, I said "THESPIANS" - Not...well, anyway..... :sqlaugh:

Got an upcoming dance scheduled - It's for the local High School's Thespian Club. Yes, for the aspiring actors/actresses of tomorrow, or not...LOL. Attending will include the school's Principal & other faculty members. Guest count of around 125.

Getting information for the event, I was told that this will be a sit-down dinner, then awards & then open dancing. But one request (are you ready for this?) - NO hip-hop, rap, urban, contemporary, old school music.

A challenge you might say?

Hmm, I love a challenge.

What might you come up with for today's youth? I've been looking at it as a fun chance to go into some classic styles of dance, i.e. Ballroom & swing.

What songs would you think would/could go over well?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

Joe

Thespians? I'm not sure what their group would allow. I'm a devoted Pedestrian so we can dance to whatever.:sqlaugh:

Joey: Initially, my first thought was music and stuff from "Fame" but then quickly realized how "camp" that would be.

My next thought would be to make it a Reality Show. Do songs about waiters, waitresses, retail clerks, gophers, and the like. That's what they will be doing to earn an actual living while telling everyone they are an actor or actress awaiting their big break. About 5% will achieve a full-time living working on stage.

Yes. A Reality Theme for Thespians. You'll be a huge hit.

Super-easy. Thespians, you see, love soundtracks and showtunes. From High School Musical to Hairspray, Dreamgirls to Dirty Dancing, you can easily please this group. Even the "Time Warp" can be played for this crowd and will pass muster with the faculty.

Here's why: The drama kids are ironically, the ones with the least amount of drama in their academic lives. They're generally not troublemakers and are usually respectful to their peers and others. As long as they're having fun and not dry-humping each other on the dance floor, you have no worries.

A swing song or two might work, and you should also take requests. I did this at a similar party that I did last year, and I got a handful of requests for songs that I never thought would work for this crowd (example: Earth Wind & Fire's "Fantasy"). As it turns out, 90% of the thespians were also in the school's jazz choir, and they had their own choreography for each song they requested. It was a fantastic party... I got my own personal jazz-choir performance, and they got to hear songs they've been dancing and singing to all year long.

Good luck!

Why not just meet with a small committee and find out what they want. Allow them to do an online planner and create their own unique night.

Brendan makes great points and those ideas would work well. I would what ideas he'd have for " The Bird Cage" theme?:sqerr:

You seem to have an open and valuable channel of communication established. Yet you will consider trusting the distant, in both space and quality, opinions of Tuck, Cap, me, and Ron. Cross your fingers maybe bb or cesar will chime in.:sqwink:

Seriously,

Ask the sponsors to have the attending kids and guests email you suggestions and favorites.

I did that, for the first time last year, with an long established HS client and the results were hundreds, ok, dozens of relatively short lists, and a few history of music inventories, with the same few requests. Upon hearing the requested, and likely to have been played anyway, songs, the students felt like I was honoring their personal requests.

Resulted in more than the usual quantity of "thank yous" from the dancing teens.

Actors are often very capable and talented dancers. You may get a very entertaining dance floor.

Also, ask about recent productions and determine if there are any dance-able or usable joints from those plays/recitals/etc.

Good Luck.

Thanks all for your input -

Cap - Please let me know where you find those inspirational shots. :)
Love it!

Ron, Rox, Brendan,

Yes, I have a call out to the event organizer hoping to hear from her in the coming weeks (event isn't until the end of May). Using DJI, it would allow for all of their input to be heard. I'll remind her to get her students to login at their convenience.

I value the input of the members here - be it serious, or for some friendly ball b*sting...

Like it was mentioned, it says something when you actually are looking forward to a 'dry hump'-free teen event. :sqeek:

Now can we turn this into WWYD thread for fun? ;)

Wait one damn minute.

You need to throw a "*" in the word "busting" but you completely spell out "dry hump". What next, no blessing, no DJ?:sqerr:

Ya took the post right out from under my fingers! I did a similar event Karaoke/DJ mix.

#1 dance hit of the night was "Do You Love Me" from the Dirty Dancing sound track. Best received karaoke tune? Believe it or not, "Maybe This Time" from Caberet. 22 year old belted it out magnificently! Who knew? :sqeek:

I thought it was for young actors your list is a pretty good one for a gay party!

Now when you say "gay party" do you mean happy lively fun with good music party or let's throw on "It's Raining Men", give me a triple snap and lets get nasty type party?

If it's the second then how would you know the song list sounded like a gay party?:sqerr:
