Ok, call me a n00bie or whatever, but I'm planning on becoming a wedding DJ. I've done DJ work before back in the late 80's early 90's, but it was in a club and with the club's equipment. I have a high end laptop, DJ software, MP3's. mixing board, table, multiple mics (SM 58's, wireless 58, samson wireless, 57's, etc.), cables, domain name, professional demeanor, haircut, and a tux. But I know I'm missing a lot and have a very limited budget to get it going. I'm very familiar with weddings since that's the industry I work in, so I know about the toasts, dances, announcements, etc. And I'll get up to the speed on contract must haves, faux pas, and the like, but what I need is equipment specs right now.

I need a set of speakers, stands, an amp and lights and I only have $600 to get these missing pieces. I know I can get 100 pound capacity stands for about $80 a pair with a carry all bag and cables. I've also found many different amps for around $150 and even lights (table and mountable) for around $100. So that leaves me around $300 to get speakers. Obviously I have found some on Ebay for $170 with stands that are 600 watt speakers, but that just screams "danger, danger" although they look really nice. But I'm not stupid. I know that $300 for a pair is going into risky territory, but it's only temporary until I can get a nice set of good JBL's or something.

My plan is only to play small weddings in maybe like a ballroom scenario, so I'm not doing outdoor events or anything (as it stands). So my question is two fold.

1) Please tell me there is a nice set of speakers that will do the job well and is reasonable in this price range. And what specs should I be looking for? For instance, how many watts should I be going for to fill a ballroom scenario?

2) Is there something amp-wise I should be looking at and/or avoiding at all costs?

:sqconfused:

If you hadn't thrown in this one sentence we WOULD have been able to help!

All the guys here will have advice (good to boot) - and we even have an in-house supplier (Ben at NLFX... check for the banner at the top of the forums) who will be able to help you spec out basic requirements and budgets.

Honestly at this point though, you might find your best case scenario in hunting out used equipment depending on your time-frame for getting going and how quickly you think you cal pull together more funds to invest.

Obviously the longer you wait and the more you can save the better off you'll be in the long run, but there's nothing wrong with a small injection of cash just to get you started and get you by as you bring in more funds.

You should rent good gear as needed per gig until you can increase your purchase budget.

You may find a good deal on older gear but God only knows what the previous owner may have put it through.

rental house might help ya retain and make more money before buying quality gear. Look at that John the one and The Real Juan Jon posting in stereo. Im the good looking speaker lol.

Welcome!!!

Talk with Ben or Kat at NLFX and see if you can work something out, $600.00 is not going to get you anything PRO grade and you'll likely be throwing the $600.00 away. If you can't work something out with NLFX do as John and Jon suggested ;) rent quality hear until you can afford your own and remember you also need backup, if you don't have it your business may never take off if events get ruined.

What about these?

found these and wonder what you guys think about these. They look nice and they're Pyle Pro speakers. They said they have custom crossovers by Eminence and Motorola horns. Says they're rated at 1000 watts each. Here's a photo attache. What are the thoughts on these? How much should I pay for a set like this?

Run Forrest.... Run!

The best advice has already been givin'. Rent for now. Why sacrafice your good name on cheap not even close to pro gear.... you'll only spend more later once you realize the mistake.

Save your $600.00 put it towards rental equipment.... save your profit and buy good quality pro-gear.

ok, I'll try and contact this person people have been mentioning here. But still, I want to keep an eye out for used gear and have no idea what to specifically look for. Can someone give me some brands, specs and model numbers? If I can just make up a list and keep it with me so I don't miss a good deal, that would be helpful.

I mean, if I were to rent them, how much would that typically run me if I get a PA and amp rental and what models/wattage/specs am I normally going to see when I rent equipment? Lots of questions i know. But I'm finally sure that I'm in the right place. FINALLY! After months of searching. I want to be gigging by mid-late July.

If you must buy used, look at some Yamaha S115V speakers. A QSC RMX amp. This should work until you can do better. Stay away from the stuff you posted above. I still think renting will be a better option. Just include the rental fee in your price.

If you can add 100.00 to your 600.00 I can point you in the direction of a DJ that is selling 2 lightly used RCF 310a speakers for 700.00. If you want the info I can email it to you or PM it to you.

JBL

For instance I see a lot of JBL JRX 115's and 125's. they seem to be touted by a lot of DJ frums, but hat's all I really like to know. the brands and models that you tend to see regularly with successful DJ setups. For instance, as a vocalist I always see Shure Beta 58's at almost all clubs. Aren't there equivalent DJ speakers that typically end up as the "norm"?

OK, I'll shut up now.

Keep your eye on:

JBL
EV
RCF
FBT
Mackie (apparently the italian made ones)
Bose
Yamaha
Cerwin Vega (Pro Gear not home audio)
Peavey
Turbo Sound
QSC

Just to name a few.

As a side note... I had a set of Yamaha BR-15 Full range cabinets... new they will run you a little over $500 for a pair.... they are Yamaha's entry level speakers however, they are pretty decent with good low end punch and will do most small to medium weddings just fine. Add a sub and you have a real nice rig.

Thank you, thank you! That's the kind of info i need. And yes, i'm sure that I could come up with an extra $100 somewhere. I'm in Atlanta. I can be reached via AIM at GetMarriedSEOGuy normally during the day. Keep these tips coming. This is fantastic.

Depends on final application.... I would not look at anything less that 250watts program.....

For example the Yamaha BR-15's are 250 Watts Program 500 Watts Peak.... then you would want an amp that can output approximately 1.5 to 2 times the Program handling of your speakers.... you want this because your speakers can handle a little more than the program but not constantly.... and since music is dynamic in nature limiting your amp to what your speakers can handle constantly (ie 250 watts program) you'll loose some of the dynamics in music.

So with the BR-15s I ran an amp that could Peak at 500 Watts...

You'll want a decent graphic eq in order to tailor your sound and get the most out of any speaker system you choose.

And as mentioned you'll want a power conditioner for sure.

A pair of Yamaha S115V's are 250W RMS/500W Program/1000W Peak at 8 Ohms.

A Yamaha P5000 amp is designed for them and is 500 Watts RMS at 8 Ohms.

You can also run them with a QSC RMX2450 which also puts 500 Watts RMS at 8 Ohms.

Small correction Rob, the BR15's are 200 RMS/400 Program/800 Peak.

Yes Rob, I also have a pair ;)
