A Few questions:
1. In your standard setup, do you include some sort of lighting at no extra charge or is it always an up sell?

2. For an event where a Projector, Montage, Gobo or similar effect is required, do you charge extra for this?

Lighting for me was always extra. My take on it is that my job was to play music and be an MC.

Same answer as 1.
 
My basic package includes a small lighting package in the price. It can be 1 of 4 options

1.) a small dance floor lighting package (2 ADJ Megapanel, and Starball II, and if larger crowd a VUE III

2.) a small uplighting package 6 Chauvet LEDRain56 can or 10-15 small Eliminator E-76 cans

3.) Monogram projection system

4.) Blisslight BL-15



If the want more than one of the above add $150 for ea. I will add the Bliss lights for $100 since it is so easy to setup.

I have reception booked later in the year where they want all four items, and upgrading the dance floor lighting to a $475.00 package ( http://www.music-by-mike.com/large4trusslights.html )and adding 12 more Chauvet LEDrain 56 cans, maybe 18 more. Also will be setting up a projection screen and projector in another room.
 
Except for a small floor box that's carried all the time anyway, lighting is an upsell.

Is this $475.00 for Sound & light or is this $475.00 just the extra for lights.

I use to use lighting as an upgrade option.... I also use to use two separate packages of hours.... I found that this was difficult for clients to understand.

I now have one package price for whatever event type they select which includes a B.A.S.I.C. lighting setup. With two options: Upgraded Lighting and Karaoke.

Once I obtain these types of lighting it will most certainly be an option at an extra charge to the client.

Just the dance floor lighting upgrade, add another $240 - 360 for the added uplighting. Also doing the ceremony and seperate speaker for cocktail hours in another room. $2K+ package, will be a long day setting up and tearing down, will probably hire a roadie to setup and come back to help pack.

Extra Charge, Lighting Packages start at $75 (uplighting) to $1500 (36' Truss of Lights)

same here. Extra Charges. Projector/LCD screens for slide shows start at $125.


Standard System is 2 speakers on sticks (No subs). Extra charges for sound reinforcement. Extra charges for Ceremony / remotes setups / Travel.

Now this is how I did in Canada, not sure what I am going to include / exclude in USA.

What kind of celebration are you planning?

Std package is DJ/MC only. Dual CD setup, 2 x 15's on stands, 500W per-side, no subs in this package.

Non-wedding = $450/4 hrs, $50 ea addl hr.
Wedding Reception = $750/4 hrs, $100 ea addl hr.
Ceremony Package w/ separate mics/system = $150
Schools (K-8) = $300/3 hrs., basic lights included. (Fridays & Saturdays, and High School event = Non-wedding prices above)

Basic lights: One t-bar with three lights/fog = $50
Truss with all the lights/fog = $100

On paper, lights are extra though I do throw basic lights in on occasion. Quite often actually. It's not even to make the deal 99.99% of the time (actually I don't think this has ever been a deciding factor), it's an after-the fact that I throw in if I like them, etc.

Projector & Screen = $99
Montage = they provide
Gobo = not doing yet - exploring options:)

Do I charge extra for drag and drop, extra skins, picking up the phone, answering an email...?

Maybe I should...?


Then again -- simple price + quality service = lots of happy customers! :)



So anyway, I'm a pretty good consumer of both products and services. One thing that ticks my sorry ass off, is getting nickled and dimed to death!

Give me a price without asking me 99 questions, and I will hire you. Waste more than 10 minutes of my time, and I will look elsewhere...

Apples and Oranges Rick...

Can you sucessfully separate Drag-n-Drop and the skins and be able to sell them separate from the software package as plugins? Maybe.

Would it be profitable for you to do so? Probably not.

But, in the DJ Service world where we are providing a Service and not a Product it is very possible and it is definately not a case of nickel and diming folks....
