I've never done one....well, I guess I've done one, but it was small time.

I have a organization that is throwing a bridal fair. They are actually doing quite a nice advertising campaign. They are expecting 300 - 500. I'm guessing they'll get 200. Not sure why I think that, but I think part of it is all the hot single ladies are locked up in Lansing Penitentiary, just down the street....

Anywhooo

I've been begged to be a part of this. They don't have any local dj's yet and several people on the committee know me and have seen my work. They really want me there. I've told them my WOM is strong enough and things are real tight financially and so for a number of reasons I can't be there. yada yada.....Plus, I've got a gig later that day. I'm not even sure I can be there for all of it. The ladies say they'll run my booth.

They are going to waive my fee so I can be there.....problem is, I don't know what to use for advertising at my booth.

I have no spiffy truss or fabric. So here's where I'm at.

New business cards
Couple posters.
Information cards (because I won't be there so I can contact them)
Fresh Flowers
Chocolate
My computer with a PHAT 26" screeen with pics and slideshows etc. that I do. Plus they can check my calendar on my website to check availability.

I feel like I'm missing MANY things...Can you help me? My wife so far is my best guess for somebody to run the booth in my absence. She really doesn't care about DJ's or anything I do, but she does like wedding dresses....some help.:sqembarrassed:

What to do? I'm a great DJ and really as busy as I'd like but this is a freebie for the most part. I figure I could really get 2010 rockin' and local!:sqembarrassed: feelin a bit embarrassed for someone who has been doing weddings for 10years. my second show....:sqlaugh:

Booths are usually piped and draped and you shouldn't need to do anything with that.

Did I read it correctly that you won't be manning your booth or did I misunderstand?

Please advise.....(gawd, that makes me feel like I'm at work!:sqfrown:):sqwink:

Kirby, I was just reading one of your old threads about bridal shows. i'm glad you chimed in....

Yes, I will not be there. funny way to say it.

I might make the first hour but thats about it....But even if I am there, I still feel weird for some reason. Do I have everything I need? This may be a good test of my sales. My rates are higher than most in my area. Fortunately, my reputation keeps them there. Some months I could use a few more bookings and would be nice to keep my rates the way they are. How do I sell my rate? Do I negotiate?

Gawd another pricing thread....sorry, I didn't mean to go there.

I don't even think pricing is my issue here. I think I'm just better if I keep my mouth shut and brides read my reviews on wedding wire....

don't do it. It does you no good not to be there. The first hour is slow. The Brides there want to see you and talk to you.

Is it better just to have a body there handing out cards?

Personally no, even if it is free.

They will try to answer questions, even if you tell them not to and that will not help your business.

IMHO

Good points Chuckie! :)

If you're gonna have a booth you should be there to sell yourself. Also I would be very uncomfortable leaving a computer and a monitor unattended.

At the shows we've done in the last few years the first hour is always the busiest and normally the last hour you stand around picking your nose (discreetely of course...:sqwink:)

I've been ask to be in a local show too, and have never been to one either. I don't think I have the time to get everything I think I would need to do it right, so I doubt I will do it this year. I agree with Chuck, that if you cannot be there, your company probably shouldn't be there.

I think I may have a way to be there for over half of it. My wife might be able to do the rest. And no, I don't have a girlfriend...but I do have 2 daughters!

lol

Back to the OP....is there anything obvious I'm missing? How do I follow up?
Should I have a drawing for $100 off of my services, then contact everyone in the pot to tell them they've won?

Not so sure that I would tell everyone that they were the "winner"...what happens if for some reason they know each other or they hear from a friend of a friend that they won $100.00 off of your services. Instead if you are set on giving something off on your pricing, just make it a show special and that if they book on-site or within a very short time-frame they are eligible for the special pricing.

If you want to just do a drawing and want to spend money, you can offer a number of different items:

1.) Massage by licensed massage therapist (real popular one that we did this year.)
2.) Gift Certificate for a meal at a nice local restaraunt
3.) Gift Card to a Retail Store (we have used Wal*Mart cards when we do an out of town show as there's a WallyWorld around every corner.)
4.) Specialized gift basket
5.) etc., etc..... :D

Of course, just my opinion! :sqwink:

sorry Kirb

I know you would have returned a similiar response LOL:sqcool:

That's why we only allowed the Brides to register, not the Mothers or their Girlfriends, etc. If they didn't have the "I'm A Bride" name tag, we didn't take their entry. :)

(And you're right, I would have come up with something similar...scary isn't it?:sqerr:)

Yes I agree to this. I'm an honest guy and being up front with my pricing is better. I would feel better too...

thanks for the conscience....now I need a beer

The nice thing about having a really good giveaway that Brides really want, like a free massage, is that you'll get accurate contact information from them.

A lot of times the Brides put down bogus information when they register at the door for the show as they don't want to be bugged by the pesky, desperate DJs (and other vendors) clamoring for their business.

That's the freakin' info I'm after. Great way to get the right info.
