I got asked to fly down to NC for a party in April. Problem is, I would have to fly down on Saturday morning and DJ that night, on rented equipment, and then fly home on Sunday morning.

The bolded part is why I won't do it.

I would have to bring my music - which is currently on a computer and CD, as I mostly use a CD - Mix2 and Rockit. But I'm not hauling CDs down there for day. I could, of course, have all my CDs on a computer by then, but I still don't feel 100% comfortable using just a laptop.

Now, would YOU do it? The pay - from relatives - would be $400 plus airfare. And of course, room and board for the night.

The event is a combo 40th and 60th birthday party.

Oh, and it would mean taking two payback or vacation days to do the event, in my case.... and if I was just going down to have fun, I might be willing to do that, but not to work.

Not for $400.00.

If it were us, here's what we'd do: Since it's relatives, we'd offer to drive the Wolf Wagon down to Carolina and do the show for per diem and $800.00-ish. Bring our own rig in the van, save them renting equipment and paying airfare.

Make a mini vacation of it... get there the night before and unwind in the motel room. Next day, drive to the location and do the show. Overnight in the motel then hit the road for home next morning. :)

I used to have relatives in the Nag's Head and Manteo area of NC but I believe they've all died off now. A niece and her family are still there.

Yeah, but it it is a 10 hour drive to Charlotte from my area, and the only way to make it happen is by flying. In any case, I won't be doing it, but in a way, I wish it was more feaseable. I like these folks.

I'm not comfortable using rental equipment. It sounds like a lot of work for a family event. I would have to bring everything I normally use for an event to feel comfortable.

I would never trust the baggage handlers with my cd library.

I guess it would depend on how much I got along with these relatives for me to even consider it. If I were really close to them, then I might be inclined to work something out.

Now if I didn't really get along with these relatives, there would be no way in hell that I would even consider it. :)

But given the scenario that you have outlined, I probably wouldn't.

Hows about passing the engagement along to Sparkie? He's in the area. :)

I pass stuff to ODJT memebrs all the time, but I'm not passing one to relatives. No offense to Sparkie, or Kyle, or anybody on ODJT, but I'm not referring ANYBODY to family... If for some reason they were terrible, or something went wrong, I would hear about it forever..... :sqerr:

No good deed goes unpunished. ;)

I have no prob with rental equipment -- I can make anything work for a few hours :)

My last "official" gig, was my niece's wedding -- drove 7 hours each way, with Grandma and 2 systems in the Mustang. Pay was all I could drink :)

Was at the hall from 8am, till 1 am the next morning. Didn't even see the wedding, that was at another place. Even helped put up the decorations, and made appetizers.

It's all good, when a party is involved :)

that's the spirit, Rick!

I would have no problem using a rented system or flying in for an event. Pay may or may not be an issue (normally favors for us are either worth doing for free or not worth doing) depending on how good of family/friend it was for. It's not always about the money or being in 100% control. Sometimes it's just contributing to the good karma account.

I agree with Rick.

Rental Equipment would not bother me one bit. It would be a very simple system, Easy to hook up.

And i would have no problem doing the show 100% computer, As i do that at every show i've done for the last 4 years...

I don't even own a lappy. I bring my big tower along...Its all there

$400 bucks for that....Hmmm prob not

That would not be my concern... my concern would be if it was reliable. I have no idea how well it functions, or how well it was taken care of.... well, really I guess I do... I was a convention center AV managerfor 3 years, and most equipment was treated VERY POORLY by not only the renters, but the employees.

Papa, I mean really.....

It would more than likely be 2 speakers on sticks, an amp, and a mixer....

It doesn't really get easier than that, and with very little to go wrong.....
it it does.....It's not your fault, And your family will know that.

I would pass the show to someone from here that lives in the area, Or rent the Equipment from a fellow ODJTer......

To me it's making a mountain out of an anthill.......

I love the Carolinas I'd be happy to do it just for the trip...a little spending money would be a bonus

Even the rental equipment can be handled as long as I had somesay in it just to make sure I had pro gear

If it was my family though that wuld be a different story :sqeek:

I have done this on more than one occasion and for other than family as well. It depends on if It is during peak season and where in the world for me. NC or most anywhere.

all hypothetical, as I'm not doing the event.

I did a wedding in chicago a few years ago. Someone was at a wedding I did and asked me if I would do a show in Chicago. I said I would. I rented equipment. It was no problem. They paid for a hotel and meals.

Overall, it wasn't bad. The flight from cleveland to chicago just less than an hour. But I charged waaaaay too little. I charged just a little more than normal. The amount of time to get ready, get to the airport, wait for the flight, fly, get to the hotel, unpack...and then repeat all of that to go home.

I enjoy traveling, so none of that was dificult. But the fact is it took 3 days to get to the event, do that event and get back home. I would do it again, but it would be at least twice what i normally charge.

LOL Good call

I was flown down to Asheville NC to do a rehearsal dinner (only, They had a band for the reception)
Told the "MY" cost (which was NOT cheap)
Airpfare for 2 (DJ and assistant)
Car Rental
And an equipment rider all to be delivered to some fancy AS***D Posh club on a hill.
Well....Diana and I were flown down with 2 laptops in hand (one for playing one for back up)
WE get to the CC to find some jazz combo setting up in our spot. after finding the coordinator and banquet captain...it was learned the "Mother of the Groom" wanted a live jazz combo to perform and that we were no longer need which p**sed off the Mother of the Bride" since I was higher and paid for by her.
Well....MOG apparently won out and I didn't play a note but got a car for a week and toured all over AShville and the souroounding area and had a good time.
Reception had a bad that was fair at best. I asked the MOB if I could plug in during their break and really gret the party hopping. She declined saying the band really wouldn't like the comptition and it might get ugly at her daughters wedding.
Got payed in full and had a nice week in Asheville touring the cites.

I don't know exactly how to respond to this post...if I should be offended or not.

Chuck - I might have possibly been interested in the gig to begin with, and probably would have done it for the mony involved, only because you're kinda like family to me here. But since you are concerned about someone "not" doing a good job for the event, and taking heat from family members after the fact, I would have to say that I would definitely not be interested, after a comment like that.

I have some of the very best equipment money can buy, and would be happy to loan you the equipment for the day at little to no charge if you were going to do the event. But since that option is out, it's a moot point.

Sometimes you gotta have a little faith.........

Just my two cents dropped in the bucket......

Papa,

I guess I have a question or two about all of this!

1. If you weren't going to do the gig and wasn't interested in having one of our ODJT family members do the gig for you, why post it here at all!

2. Do you have so little faith in the DJs on this site that have been doing these types of events for 10, 20, 30 years, that you would diss them all by saying that they might be "If for some reason they were terrible, or something went wrong, I would hear about it forever.....".

What a horrible thing to say about your fellow ODJT members!

I would not even hesitate to ask Sparkie, Jon, Fred, Steve, Chuck or anyone else here to help me out in this situation!
