Howdy Folks,

Rob's radiocast yesterday got the hamster going in my head. I think it would be pretty cool if some of us did radio shows. I'm been thinking of starting up a small hosting account for it. Basically all you have to do is play music on your computer via Winamp and a plug in you can do announcements just like a radio jock.

Anyhow it's just an idea I was thinking of; it would be fun and easy to implement. I'm looking to get some idea of numbers, who would be interested? How many would tune in and stuff like that.

Thanks,
Dan

I'll give it a go

If everyone played their favourite mixes and sets or just their favourite songs and artists we could get some real insight into what's popular in different areas and what kinds of music we listen too.
I like the idea.

Like the idea....I do a blog talk radio broadcast and the one thing they worry about is playing music with all the legalities involved....Im up for it if we can get by the legal aspect....Im thinking Dan would be the one hit hardest if someone got stupid and reported it ...just a thought

If Dan would be willing to give me the technical details I need I would be willing to run it we don't have the legal issues in Canada yet

Rob gave me a call last night and was helping me setup winamp, as I kinda thought the same idea would be real cool.

Personally, even though I had the songs, it was nice to hear from a fresh perspective a different, COMMERCIAL FREE, real program.

Rob even sang a little karaoke, and it was very entertaining, and I wish I had a few beers in my hand.

Last night, my train stopped running when winamp closed down on me when i was trying to transfer files, and i never got back on to try again.

I am going to get a fresh start, and see if I can get some music transferred over.

On this subject...I think it is a GREAT IDEA!!! From what I heard last night, I think it would fun to hear different people give us a show! I really love the idea, and as soon as I figure this thing out, I am 100% IN!!

You play your own commercials at home? :sqwink:

That was my only real worry although I'm not too worried about myself personally. You cannot take blood from a stone :sqwink: However I was worried about ODJT's possible liability if anything ever came about. This is why if I do it I'm doing the actual streaming off site and hosting the website for it under a separate domain and another host. They can shut down the radio site but not ODJT. :sqcool:

I do this now on CMMR as many of you know! It will cost someone to have the streaming server and the more listeners you want dan the more expensive it gets. Right now we have availability for 100 listeners we just upgraded from 50. When you first begin you will have very few listeners. You will also have to advertise it like heck to gain listeners which also takes $$$$ to make it happen.
The only problem we have had is keeping the interest of the DJs wanting to keep doing their shows. It is time consuming for some since you always want to keep your show fresh like I but when you do it weekly it is just very difficult to do. But I must say that it is entertaining, I get to practice my skills, listen to some songs that I would never play at events, clients get to listen to me live on the net, and most of all it is fun. It is great thing to do but someone will have to pay that bill! LOL........

I will do a weekly punk rock show, I know everyone loves some good old school punk rock.:sqwink:
I think it would be cool to play whatever you are listening to right now, it could get everyone listening to something they may not normally listen too. Who knows, you may end up liking some of what you hear.

ASCAP, BMI & SESAC still apply. They won't go after the site, they will go after the site owners, principals, as well as the broadcaster for willful infringement. If you can't afford the license, I wouldn't do it.

I could be wrong so don't take this as gospel.

If it were recent promotional material only, provided to DJs it may not subject to licencing. For example, CDX deals only with non-reporting radio. According to their licencing agreement with the labels, their discs aren't avalable to stations that report to Billboard. The service is for indie radio, DJs and dance instructors.

Don't take my word for it. I'd suggest an email or chat with the proper authority first. :)

I used to run an online shoutcast radio station, similar to what Dan is saying. NBOX networks if anyone remembers way back when. . . You HAVE to pay royalties to appropriate places, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC to legally broadcast otherwise you CAN be shut down and possibly fined.

Regardless of wheter the music is promotional in nature or not. You must obtain permission to play the songs.

Terestrial radio is different and are exempt from the licensing. Also there are a couple of DCMA rules that deal with how songs can be played, when they can be played, the time before another artist can be played, how many times a song can be played in a day, etc.
