Colleagues : I finally got my hands on a Stars on 45s video disc with most of their good stuff on it. The auction said video disc. I won it at entry level bidding.

It arrived today. It's a Capacitance Electronic Disc System - Encoded Videodisc. I thought I had at least a handful of every media type there is but this is a new one on me.

A 12" by 15" plastic permanent sleeve housing with a video disc inside that only comes out (I guess) when inserted into a special player (I guess).

Has anyone ever used these discs before and still own a player for them? What brand/model might still be out there?

Can I rip the cover/housing off and play it in one of my old 12" video karaoke players?

Cap, I thought I had heard and seen every electronic gadget ever invented!!!!

Where on EARTH did you find this thing, lol

this type of disc was only played by the RCA "Selectavision" CED player.

There are still players out there.......just google (or e-bay) for "Selectavision CED RCA" and you may get lucky!

What was different about CED (and the reason why they won't play on LD players) is they were read with a NEEDLE, not a laser!

The signal is a digital one, that is pressed onto vinyl, the needle reads the signal and its converted back into analog thru a DAC (digital-to-analog converter).

A very weird format, and was very short lived (1986 - 1989).

Thanks everyone. I read the Wikipedia article and did the eBay thing. Seems I bought a great yacht cheaply only to find that it needs a very expensive propulsion device to make it work.

Hopefully, maybe someone here owns one and I can rent it for a day or two.

wow Cap you have a very expensive frizzbie there :)

Hey, easy on me guys. I've just gotten my annual mistake out of the way much earlier than normal.

Yup I can recall RCA's SelectaVision videodisc. I believe Zenith offered a similar model as well. They were very expensive (and high maintenance since the styli didn't last long). RCA's VHS video cassette format pretty much did them in.

DJ Dennis : Thanks. I wandered there yesterday.

It appears as though an eBay auction is going to be my player source and the prices are prohibitive for the scope of this project.

I'm going to a search of Craig's list and maybe catch a local garage sale.

So, now I'm still searching for that Stars On 45 collection on VHS or DVD.

DJ Sarge: If I were truly anal, this post would never have been needed. ;>) !

Any minute now, Rick will jump in and make some age related or non-smoking reference about me to which I will be forced to beat him severely between the head and eyeballs with my chrome plated walker and antique crystal ashtray.

By the way, the BOSE related references are getting a tad old (there ya go, Rick, another opening). I've played with or compared most of the other Man and/or Boy DJ toys out there and it still provides one of the sweetest bangs for the buck on the market. Dynacord is in a whole different engineering design, class, and price range and it most definitely delivers.

Cap, maybe I would look at places that do conversions of tapes and other types of film, etc. to DVD, they may be able to convert the disc into a DVD.

HiredPower : Per your suggestion, I went there. Just emailed the fella who seems to be the selectavision guru. Hopefully, he'll know of someone who does the conversions DJ SVO suggested.

Thank you.

Got me again Fred!

Yup I can recall RCA's SelectaVision videodisc. I believe Zenith offered a similar model as well. They were very expensive (and high maintenance since the styli didn't last long). RCA's VHS video cassette format pretty much did them in.

As I ran through everyone's comments, I was asking, Isn't this the video disk that used a NEEDLE?

Yup, E-Bay, graveyard of old technology searching for new bucks.

Cap:

It's still a collectible:sqwink:! Certainly the other 2 fans in the world of Stars on 45 will start a bidding war for your exquisite treasure.

Andy

Andy : I think I will hang on to it. I have one 8 track. Might as well have one of these to add to my museum (attic).
