Well,

I've been wanting to upgrade to a new cell phone for a while. I have no existing contracts w/ any cell provider's, but I will want to trasport the numbers to another carrier if I end up switching.

Currently have a Nextel (now Sprint) i90c - YEAH, a real dinosaur, but it does what it does, very well at that. My current "Free-incoming call" plan allows me to forward my business line to the cell phone at no additional cost for when I'm out & about.

I would like to upgrade to a Blackberry / PDA-type phone.

It NEEDS to have access to internet, web-browsing & webmail. I saw that the Verizon Blackberry storm has the ability to view/edit Word/excel/Powerpoint documents. Can ALL Blackberry's do this?

GPS would be a nice "to have" feature.

I like the Direct Connect feature that I currently have. I see that Sprint released a new phone, the 8350i that has this feature. But can it do the Office (word/ppt/excel) editing?

Finally, I'm not a "Text" person by any real means - but I do get my DJI leads this way....:)

Your input is appreciated. I am willing to change providers as long as it gives me what I want.

If you were shopping for a new phone today, what would your "must have" features be?

Not sure how much you are looking to pay per month, but I have the Sprint Everything plan, $100 a month and it includes unlimited EVERYTHING. Voice, text, email and web access.

Right now, for Christmas, Sprint is running a special on the Palm Centro. You get it free with a 2 year contract.

I looked at all the plans out there, and compared a lot of phones before I got my new one about 5 months ago, and Sprint really has the best of everything, and you can not beat the deal on the Centro right now.
 
In my area, VERIZON & CINGULAR are the only cell phone services that have signals!

Pick the plan that gives you the best phone.....and go from there.

Stay away from "gimmicky" phones....they have not perfected the Blackberry "Storm," for example. Even the I-Phone is somewhat of a joke*

*many of the I Phone "apps" do not work properly, if at all. The "Urban Spoon" for example.
 
I just bought a Sanyo Katana Eclipse.

It has different rings for each caller.

It also has different coloured lights on the front for each caller when the cell rings.

Great when I'm entertaining. I place it on my console. If I can't hear the phone, because the music is loud, I can see the colours flashing.
 
Joe I am on Sprint on the simply everything 450 plan (half the minutes but still unlimited everything else) and own the centro... I love it. It takes a little getting used to the small size of the keys but once you do things go fast and it is super easy to navigate and personalize.

But I do have to agree with the pick what you think will work for you mentality... I researched this phone for 2 months before I decided to get it. Hope this helps a little.

I was waiting for someone to post a picture of a bag phone, but that one was close enough.

Doing more reading, I see that the 8350i that I mentioned does have the Word-to-Go editing, viewing PDF e-mail attachments, etc...

One other thing - a full QWERTY keyboard is a ' must have '.

I heard that the Nextel/Sprint Direct Connect is actually getting better b/c many are leaving 'like rats on a sinking ship'.... Hmmm.

I just migrated to an iphone on AT&T and still have the Blackberry World on Verizon but i tried the storm for 2 weeks and thought it freaking sucked.

Tried the G1 phone for 2 weeks and it sucked too.

BUT... if i didnt love this iphone i would have gone with a blackberry bold, full qwerty and much more new user friendly than previous blackberry models

Stay away from the storm though they WERE NOT READY
 
It's funny Kyle, because I really think a lot of it has to do with the area you live in.

Where I am, you could not pay me to have an Iphone. The AT&T service is HORRIBLE here (plus, I just don't think the phone is worth what you get). And I would not get near the G1 because T-Mobile's service is worse.

The only two reliable services are Verizon and Sprint, and I have heard nothing but rave reviews of the Storm from the people that I know who have them.

I would never have one, because I would never own a phone that is completely touch screen and does not have a real keyboard on it.

I would suggest to anyone to ask the people you know in your area which they prefer. Just because I like Sprint and have no issues with is in my area does not mean others in a different area will have the same success with them.
 
I have a Blackberry Bold, it is a great phone for business use and the BB push e-mail is the best. I never have to check my e-mails they are automatically pushed from my ISP to my BB the second they arrive. It has PDF viewing as well as most MS office files.
That being said for entertainment purposes I wish I would have bought the iPhone.

Yeah, my search continues.

May be looking at switching carriers - seeing that I just signed onto Verizon for home phone,internet & TV - will see what they can do.

Seeing the new Blackberry that Sprint offered, the only thing that it has that it's predecessors didn't have was the PTT....
 
Verizon with the Blackberry Curve...love it.
I have six different business email accounts and each one has a different alert. The unit automatically switches to vibrate when placed in it's holster. Plenty of apps available. I just found one for writing email templates, exactly what I need for "information requests" when I can't get to my laptop and DJEP (hmmm, just realized, I never tried to access DJEP from my phones browser cause it didn't work on my old phone). Just added the OperaMini browser. Looking for a better email reader, just haven't decided on which one yet. My wife loves it because no matter what profile I have it set for, calls from her will always ring through (I have this habit of silencing the phone at home).
 
The only things I really require in a cell phone is that it has a large easy to find OFF button and I can dial out or receive calls no matter where I am (so far no luck in that search)!
