Drax,

If I may, look away from the show...

The show is not what matters to us as DJs.

DJ's want someone to represent them before the FCC. We want to know where to get our music legally. We want the RIAA (Ah, never mind on that one).

Get my drift here?

Excuse my French, but we want a leader with two very large balls, willing to take on the world, and help our industry -- not those giving payola.

Are you willing to part ways with immediate cash flow, to make our industry better for the long term?

Rick, smoke a little Brah and calm down... LOL ;)

I more than any of you understand what Drax is going through putting this event on. None of you have the experience that I do at putting on an event like this. I know the headaches, the amount of time and personal energy that it takes. Drax is doing a 3 day event with 20 presenters, the one my wife and I put on is a 5 day event with 40 teachers coming from 5 different countries.. Try scheduling that!

When any of you start putting on an event of that size, you can throw in your 2 cents.

It sounds to me that Drax is trying to find that happy medium that is so important in a conference like this.... appealing to the newbies and the old timers. THAT is a fine line.

You HAVE to have the Randy's, Peters and Marks at event, for a lot of people, they are a draw. A lot of people come to hear them, a lot of people come to hear the new guys speaking.

The nature of the beast (expos) is what it is. Trying to find new and different ways to present it and putting a twist on it is something that takes time, imagination and effort to pull off.

It's nice to hear constructive, well thought out ideas and thoughts. THAT is useful.

What is not useful is saying "don't do this or that". Put up or shut up. I get so tired of hearing people bitch about how bad something was without offering ideas on how to make it better.

People like Mobile Beat, DJ Times, Smaller Local groups and now ADJA are trying to do something that believe in will help.

You think education wont help? Fine,,,,tell us what will? Give us solid practical ideas on what can be done?

Or think you could do it better? Fine. Join something and help out. Get on that planning committee and put your money where your mouth is.

It takes money to get the word out. It takes money to "make our industry better for the long term"

Sometimes DJs can piss me off.

Chuck,

I'm not an event expert -- best I've ever done was 10k.

My point is simple -- I don't want an event -- I want a leader.

I guess I'm stuck with Obama, since nobody else wants to pony up,and properly deal with the issues we face as DJs...

This is not a grudge match -- I have faith that Drax has the knowledge.

My customers and I, want the balls -- not the glitz!

Where in that announcement is any promise to make huge income selling laundry detergent?

Damn that is funny!:sqlaugh:
That is the funniest thing I've read here since...hmmm, well since my post in the blacklights thread.

Seriously, I am intrigued by this new event. I may have to try and make my way to Sweet Home Chicago this summer.

Take this opp to bring in some fresh new faces, new ideas, and we can do wonders
Randy, Mike, Jim & Scott
Those are new faces? I've heard Randy 3 times in the past 2 years. Same BS every time. All he does is change his title.
If Peter or Mark are there so what?
Which means they will be there. So what? It's expected.
There are many new and upcoming DJ's that might be impressed with their speeches I'm sure. How else are they going to sell their books and DVD's. DJing just doesn't seem to be cutting it for them. So what if they speak, I'm sure the room will be packed. Good for them. It's just another typical DJ show but well worth the money.

A few of the other guys listed in the show have been on DJA and Prodj for sometime now so I've heard their message time and time again. They are basically mouth pieces for Ferrell and the worth movement. Sorry but they just don't impress me. You might as well just call it the DJA Follies.

How many speakers do you have from the New England area? I didn't see any listed that I noticed. How about the North East in general? You've got a great DJA lineup as expected.

If this show was closer I would spend the $49 to attend. But it would only be to networking with the real talented people. Those who don't make it up on stage. The ones who really know what's going on. And of course to watch Bill burn down the house (that's always fun). I've learned more standing out in hallways or sharing a cup of coffee at breakfast than I ever did at most of the seminars.

You may not like my comments but I didn't start this thread. As with any business, and the ADJA is a business, If they are going to put out a product for the consumers to purchase then we have every right to comment on it.

Now, lets see the vendor list so we can rip some of them also!!:sqwink:

Rick,

The tasks that you state take money, they take SERIOUS cash flow. Your not going to get there with fancy speeches. Without cash flow there isn't a ghost of a chance to achieve any of those. Until we have a serious cash position, your not going to get the time of day in Washington. No, I am not talking about buying votes, but you will have to make several trips there to get the openings you seek. I have been working those issues for a very long time. I have made several trips there on my own dime. I have learned what is required to make it happen. We are working on that. Until the naysayers & haters start working & putting their time & money where their mouth is, it's just talk. Fancy talk won't get it done. Having the resources to tackle the job will. Feel free to call me anytime to discuss this or any other issues you wish.

We are putting together a great event. It will be worth well more than we are charging for it.

People like Mobile Beat, DJ Times, Smaller Local groups and now ADJA are trying to do something that believe in will help.
Chuck,
I think we have done that and continue to do it as well. We put up and still do. http://www.snapdjs.com/Meetings.html
If I were the one making money on a show like this then I'd offer a lot more.

So basically this thread was just an advertisement for the ADJA and not meant to be a discussion? And here I thought this was a chat board.:sqwink:

I'm going back to look at naked women.:sqerr:

Ron it is a discussion but we really have to learn to join forces a bi more. Both sides need to adjust and come to a common playing field to gain success as a real well oiled machine. It seems we are our own worst enemy's in this effort. Naked girls want us to sell our gear or cut back on our late night efforts. I see it as just another obstacle in the quest for unity.

I support what Drax is trying to do for the industry, and I don't believe he should be lumped with all the other aforementioned names. This is not a statement for or against them, just a statement of fact that Drax is his own man.

Drax deserves all the credit in the world he is trying to do something while most are just complaining.

It's well known and documented throughout the boards I am no fan of PM or MF but for $49 bucks how can you lose especially with so much more on the lineup. For that price, or even for $249, if you can learn anything it's worth the money you spent. If you can't learn anything mabye it's time for some introspective. Aside from a semi decent set of speaker wires what can you get for $49....

Give the guy a break here go see the show at least before you condem it

I've gotta say that $49 really is very little to pay. I've been to conferences that cost over 20 times that for admission (my employer paid ;) ). If the J Mac and I weren't taking all of our available vacation time to plan our wedding, we would have considered taking the 2-hour drive to meet some of you folks.

Drax makes a lot of valid points. I'm hearing people complain about 3 or 4 out of 20 presenters. If you can make the trip, I recommend giving this a chance.

Chuck,

I'm not an event expert -- best I've ever done was 10k.

My point is simple -- I don't want an event -- I want a leader.
...but that is not what you should expect nor what is being offered from an educational seminar.

Leadership can't be scheduled.

Ron it is a discussion but we really have to learn to join forces a bi more.
Jon, you can be bi, I still like women.:sqwink:

This has nothing to do with joining forces to fight the evil empire. A business has presented a sales pitch to offer us a service. The service does not seem appealing to me over all and I've stated my reasons why. People need to get off their high horse and look at this for what it is. It's a business venture, either you need the service or you don't. Spending $49 dollars would certainly be worth the price of admission but the added cost to get there would not. Simple plain economics. The majority of presenters, in my opinion, is not worth past the $49. I've heard most of their rants before and I don't see them offering anything different. Even the new presenters are just the same old DJA cronies who I've listened to way to much. Since this is a discussion I'll give you my opinion on one of the presenters as listed on the shows advertisement.

Creating Top of Mind Awareness in Your Clients.
In this session Ed will discuss the various ways to create an automatic Top of Mind Awareness in your clients. He will demonstrate several methods & highlight one he has found most useful. Each attendee with receive a free gift.

Ed Frank - is one of the more gifted people in our industry. His ability to see uses for different tools to help him stay ahead of his competition. Ed has been a DJ for nearly 20 years.
From reading this does anyone know what Ed will be presenting? I can only guess. And my guess is Send Out Cards. Ed is a seller of SOC's and has presented this before at the MB Summer Show here in MA. It was nothing more than a sales presentation to purchase the product. His free gift is an on line account with SOC so that you can try it for yourself. Some people who have never heard this before might find it interesting and even useful, but I already own it. What I wonder is why wouldn't the add say he's selling SOC? Anyone here want to sit through another SOC seminar raise your hand. Maybe I'm wrong, it's possible.

Look, I really don't care who goes, who spends the money, what anyone gets out of it. I've said it many times in this thread that it's well worth the $49. It's just not worth much more for me. If it were closer to home I'd be there in a heart beat. Heck, I'd even buy someone a pass at that price just to be my friend for the day.:sqwink: (someones gotta watch my back).

I'm not trying to change anyones mind whether to go or not, but I don't need to spend that kind of money right now. I don't see the economy changing that drastic in 6 months so for me it's not a smart move.

I would think that this is the kind of information a presenter would want to hear. It's called feedback. We all look for it, good or bad. We use it to then make decisions on what to change in our business. After all, when people in my area gather together and discuss if this is a good show to attend I will share my honest thoughts.

Lastly, and I don't mean this directed at anyone specific but why is it that if we don't learn from those talked about in this thread or at these specific seminars then we don't want to learn. That couldn't be further from the truth. How do you know we aren't finding education elsewhere. Education that is much more valuable to us than listening to another Worth Tour Reloaded Perfect Host Jamboree. When I want to grow my business I look at home first for assistance. You can see by our SNAPDJ line up of meetings we bring in some of the areas best professionals in all different business. The cost savings by sticking close to home is more fiscally responsible then spending thousands to attend something I've heard before. I've learned more sitting in a hotel room shooting the sh@! than most of these seminars. Heck, I learn more here on this board from people that have more to offer than some could imagine. The ones who don't want to learn are those who don't even know boards like this exist.

Of course this is just my opinion.

Rick, smoke a little Brah and calm down... LOL ;)

I more than any of you understand what Drax is going through putting this event on. None of you have the experience that I do at putting on an event like this.

Um. I absolutely do. I worked in a convention center. I was the AV manager for a while, and was the manager of the convention center as well for a short time. ( 2 different companies ). I've put together shows with 30,000 people in attendance over a weekend.

The ADJA is simply offering an educational product. Apparently, there are very diverse opinions regarding the offered educational material. If it doesn't meet your needs or desires, simply find what you need elsewhere and let this offering pass you by. No harm, no foul.

Now, had Drax or any ADJA rep come here and made "My way or the Highway" or "If you don't conform you are less" claims, then I could understand the conflict. But that is not what I read and can't fathom why there are such negative responses.

Maybe misery truly does love company.:sqwink:

SJRick,

If you seek leadership and are not finding it, become it. Otherwise, you are just wasting your energy publicly complaining about those that are making the effort. I guess it's the old "Lead, Follow or get out of the way."

I suspect you don't actually need it and that is why you can't find it.

You are correct Rox, I'm not really the one in need, in this case. But, I hear it from a lot of my customers, in our support calls and emails -- which is why I bring it up.

Many won't attend conventions, because they hear the stories about them being infomercials, or they've attended them before.

I've also heard from many, that they don't want to join the ADJA (or any organization for that matter), because they don't feel the lobbying efforts are enough, or successful.

The one I hear the most, is why is there no music license for DJs, so they can purchase and legally play any song, without having to do a subscription based thing. They feel the organizations should be more focused on those issues.

I could probably do better in the way I try to get this message out. But, please don't shoot the messenger for trying... :)

I would just like to be one to prove Rick's point. I don't bother with the ADJA because I don't see any real benefit to me, especially where there is no chapter in Indiana. I've read some of the columns in Mobile Beat from some of the presenters and I have no interest in going because I don't want to have products or books or dvds, etc pushed at me.

OK, several are trying to paint a bad picture of this. As Rocky siad, it is an educational opportunity.

So what if Ed is harping SOC, you don't have to do his seminar. There are others to choose from.

Now in doing the math, it can cost me under $700 to drive there. It is an 12 hour journey but one I've wanted to do. I am confident I can find a decent hotel on Expedia or Price Line under the $119 listed on the ADJA board; I saw some for $80/night already. So hear it is...

Admission = $49
Gas @ $3.00/gallon = $258 (OK, maybe $260).

Travel - Leave on July 10th in early morning and drive for about eight hours with breaks. One hotel stay @ $80. Continue on the 11th for the balance of the trip and arrive at hotel. Hotel stays for the 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th @ $80 each. Check out on the 15th and drive for eight hours with breaks. One hotel stay @ $80. Arrive back home on the 16th.

There would be six hotle stays in this @ $80 each. That comes to $480. Total cost of the experience $689. Value of the experience, priceless.

It is beyond me how the topic of Beatmixing has anything to do with DJA or GWYW. It doesn't. Same for Harmonic Mixing. Same for increasing your Marketing effectiveness, or finding & training your next great DJ. While not a multi op I found the training to be very useful to my own skill set. How does info on the Mitzvah market, or building a school dance business, Or examining how to do more with your cocktail set than simply throw on a JAZZ CD, How does learning to keep good Financial records & how to use QB have anything to do with GWYW or DJA?

Answer they don't. Some still just want to keep on insinuating that they do. Their dislike of some people spillls over into almost anything they write. We are offering a lot for the price. Great content, great exhibits, Great night time events. We have even more seminar content to reveal shortly. For the price there will be plenty to chose from, so you don't like a presenter or two, go to a different one or go spend that time in the exhibit hall. Or even hang out in the hallways. We have reserved some of the best hallways in the industry.... ;)

We are trying to do something different. We are giving everyone several choices of things to do during the day. Your not locked into only one seminar choice. We are not out to make money on this, our goals are to make great content more available & more affordable so that anyone in our industry of almost any means at all can make it. We set it to start on Sunday specifically to appeal to those members of our industry that have a different profession, so that they can come in Sunday, stay Monday, leave that night or early the next day losing little from their other job. We are also doing to so that everyone that is a full time Professional DJ can also have the majority of the week left in their own office for appointments & working their business.

We have tried to take all of the feedback presented to us from other shows & incorporate the best things that we can. We appreciate the feedback from our colleagues when it is honest without agenda.

We are simply trying to offer something different, something better than has ever been done before at a conference.

Rox,
He brought it up on a discussion forum. We are discussing it. I won't apologize for discussing my views and opinions about this service. It's no different than if I were talking about what car to buy or where's the best place to purchase a TV. Because you can relate a person directly connected to this service we are no allowed to comment? Yes, Drax is trying to do a good thing. I commend him for that. He is also trying to increase his profit margin for the ADJA. That's called business. We all do it.

can't fathom why there are such negative responses.
Because I am commenting on a service that was offered to me. I am sharing my thoughts on a discussion forum. At least this board lets the discussion continue. Over on ProDJ there were two posts regarding this subject then the thread was locked. Go figure.
