I've been thinking of using a "show business" name that's simpler and that sounds better than my real name. Is there a formal, legal procedure for doing this?

Since my real name is weird enough I've never had to create one. However, just like any other business, if you use the name as your business name, you will have to create a business bank account for it to cash checks. Other than that, it's all in the exposure.
So if I want to use my first and middle name as my first and last name in public it's no big deal and no legal issue? Simple as that?

As Sole Proprietor you simply set up your business name as "trading as" and then your real name on the account!
Incorporated you set it up as the corp name!
You can trade mark your name, unless as in my case, it has already been done by that other guy!

To be honest, I didn't think up the Mr. Delicious name, I "borrowed" it from someone I saw on the internet. I liked the name and thought it sounded funny and cute. It's a great icebreaker and I'm getting some mileage out of it. The only one who's not that crazy about it is my wife, go figure.
She doesn't like Mr. Delicious? The women has no taste!!!

Originally I was going to call myself Big Daddy Love(I'm 5'6"). I liked the sound of it and it was a little on the outrageous side, but I've settled on Mr. Delicious and it's here to stay. Some people think it's a joke, I don't care. Most people get a chuckle out of it and that's a good thing IMO. My wife almost persuaded me to drop it and I'm glad I didn't. It's something people remember and that's what I want.

it's two vowels.... "Au"
when I started in radio, I had the choice to use it or change it...
and decided it was easier to change it
(since you cant see how it is spelled on the radio)
There are times I wish I hadn't done it...
but the anonymity is kinda nice.
All the people at my bank know me by both names
so I can accept checks with either name.
No forms, no business incorporations, or DBA's needed.
If your real name is unique, but not too confusing (like mine)
I would go with it.

besides, I cant tell you how many times I had to introduce myself in a non-work setting and forgot which name to use

Mike Fox, I like that. Simple, easy to remember and pronounce. I'd take that any day over an ethnic sounding, hard to pronounce, weird sounding name like what I have. I like simplicity. It's mostly for other people, to make things easier for them, so they don't get hung up early on in the conversation on something trivial. The Mr. Delicious on the other hand is a good conversation starter and catches peoples' attention. So far it's been a very good tool that I intend to milk for all it's worth.

Besides, there are very many times when you will need to sound classy and professional.
Imagine calling a potential customer
getting his/her receptionist
who asks, "who may I say is calling..."
Fox (or Foxx) was kinda given to me by my first radio boss...
I was (and still am) kinda sneaky
so the comment was made that I was "sly as a fox.."
Try the radio trick mentioned above
use your real first name (so you dont ignore people who are calling your name)
and your middle name.

Mike your points hold merit for me anyhow. Having been the DJ Entertainer and then joining DJ forums I held several different names answering to most anything but never late for supper. When becoming part the ODJT staff and then taking on the advertising and sales portion of this site I had a strong inclination to use my real name to allow a more proper and professional view of who I am. I continue to use the Jay Tea Vegas handle with my DJ biz however upon launching a new business alongside I will be considering the use of my real name there as well to work alongside the elegant upperscale clients I intend on gaining.
