I have a couple of questions!

If he is that rich, why does he want to charge anything for DJ services?

He could do all these highend gigs for free if he simply wants to be the DJ! He will get a lot more events this way as well!

As for being friends with many "rich" clients why would he suddenly want to become the hired help for these same friends?

I have clients and I have friends if I agree to do a gig for a friend I have someone who works for me do the gig and I am there as a guest not the hired help!

I don't know about you, but no matter how much money I have, I want more. I certainly didn't ask him about the why and why nots of of he wants to do.

I charge friends and relatives to DJ; why shouldn't he?

I no longer DJ for friends and relatives because I don't want to be their hired help why would he? If I do supply a DJ and setup for friends and family I don't charge them and it is on my terms and at my private event or I am a guest at theirs.

Money is good if you need it but if I were a multi-millionaire I would certainly consider other more lucrative methods of producing more of it. Something that required a lot less work and a lot less personal involvement for myself.

If I were to do this in my area, I might end up with 4 weddings a year; and that just isn't going to cut it for me.
Whithout knowing the dollar amounts, how can you make a statement like that?

That's easy! If he is knocking down $50,000 per gig I am all for what he is doing! Who needs friends when you can be the hired help for that price!

I have a buddy who wants to ONLY DJ highend ( read high price events )..... he is thinking about changing his company name to The High End DJ Company, or something similar. He's open to suggestions, I bet. He also thought of High End Entertainment.....

Crazy or smart?

I want to be a low end DJ, so I have changed my name to The Vinyl Spinner.

He may have the High End Equipment, High end clients but does he have the High End skills of a DJ?:sqwink:

Since when do high end DJs need the skills of a DISC JOCKEY? I mean, a DJ is a secretary, cashier, Tom Cruise, and anything else but somebody who actually JOCKIES DISCS for a living!

I agree with the "location" idea.
Where I live and work...
the average-priced and low-end priced wedding receptions
far outnumber the high end events.
keep in mind two things:
1- never forget where you came from. if you could somehow start out at the top, you could probably get away with it. but if return clients are all of sudden told your are high end, and charging alot more...you'll lose your bread and butter.
2- clients base their DJ decisons on either a bargain price...or because they have seen your work and like you. if a high end client is looking for a DJ, they are not going to look around for the highest price and assume they're getting a better DJ.

With so many services chasing the High End.....

nobody seems to be targeting the Middle Market (what I call the "Costco" crowd).

I'm inclined to let the "High End" companies battle it out, while I cherry pick the non-cheesy low-maintenance couples.
