Received This Email....

These folks are right. NYE is not an acceptible date for a fundraiser even it is legit. A free DJ on NYE = a kid with his bedroom stereo.

Both Steves are right ~ free gigs beget free gigs. Do one and the panhandlers will be popping out of the woodwork and ringing your phone off the hook.

I did one of those private fundraisers several years ago. It wasn't free but I gave 'em a break. Supposedly they were raising money for some guy who'd had a heart attack and needed money. To make a long story short, they had maybe 20 people show up. Ticket sales didn't even cover what they paid me, let alone what the rental house charged 'em.

I sent this email:
Sorry to hear about your mother. It is not often that we are asked to participate in fund-raising efforts for relatives. In order to provide a quote for this event, I will need some more information. What kind of fund-raising event is this (dinner, dance, game night)? What time frame are you looking at for the fundraiser? At what venue are you holding the event? What other vendors (food, venue) have you booked for this event?

Hi Anna,
Thank you so much for your time and response it is greatly appreciated. We will be holding this event in a large house. It will be family friendly we will be having food donated, and beer donated. There have been no other vendors booked for the event so you would be the only one so far. We will have other people donate for door prizes, food things like that but there will be no other vendors present. The fundraiser will run from 7pm-approx 2am. We really would not need a DJ until approx 9PM if that would help. We are really looking for someone to do this as a donation since it is a fundraiser we could set up something like a tip jar for the DJ so they would receive some form of payment for the night. We will be holding poker tournaments, dart tournaments, a childrens carnival from 7pm-9pm, door prizes and cash prizes. We are expecting approx 200+ people. Let us know if you need any other information from us.

Think about this... 200+ people in a "large" house..... what, like 10,000 SF home? I have a 2500 SF home and having 50 people INSIDE would be very hard to do....

That means that SOMEONE is pretty darn rich.....
 
like others have said, I do not mind donating my services for worthy causes. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it's good for business.

I donate my time for an animal shelter fundraiser. they were going to have it on a Saturday. I said, move it to a Friday and ill do it. They did.

just last week I did a free karaoke show at a senior center....on a Sunday afternoon.

Saturdays and New years eve are simply off limits when it comes to charity work. This is a business. I have advertising bills, music, vehicle maintainance, gas, insurance, office supplies, office equipment, phone, internet, and sound equipment among other expenses while trying to make a profit.

These days are your inventory. They are limited. Giving away the most popular inventory does not make any business sense at all.
 
Her response sounded fairly legit, but of course it would still have to be checked.

Unfortunately, it just doesn't matter. By giving away your NYE, you would be the largest contributor BY FAR., and you don't know this person, while the others are her friends.

Another night, maybe. NYE? Not a chance...:sqcool:
 
Well, I had done a web search on her and all I could find was information about working from home (like the scam posts/emails about how easy it is to lick envelopes) and her company that sells crafts on ebay. That was all enough to throw up a few flags...and even just from the emails - I never had a good feeling, you know?
 
I don't blame ya for turning it down, Ducky. Seems to me that these folks are looking for a free DJ for their NYE party and attempting to cover by calling it a fundraiser.

I could be wrong... but it just sounds fishy to me. :)

That's the verdict I came up with. That's the worst driving night of the year...it's gonna take a lot more than passing around a hat to get me out of the house to DJ. :sqcool:
 
Even though I know you already made up your mind tell her to ask her 200+ to donate and extra $5.00 a piece to the DJ Ducky Charity. In PA you have to register your chairty (I believe with the atternoy general) My two newphews have cystic fibrous and I do about five jobs a year for them and they will not let me work for free they always get one of the businesses donating to sponsor me. I always donate it back though. I guess my point is there are ways for them to pay you. I tell my guys to pick one or two chairtys that they are willing to work for and tell everyone else they have to pay.
 
hey Ducky - offer her a freebie on the 30th and say sorry but because the 31st is a paid job that I can make a living then thats all I have available

she can take it or leave it!!
 
Oh you're right about NYE being the worst driving night of the year. :eek:

I used to do regular NYE shows for the same client for years. Every year it was the same thing ~ had to go through those damn DUI checkpoints on the way home. I don't drink at the shows (can barely DJ sober, lol) and it really ticked me off.

Well I found a back road way to get home. It was a bit slower 'cause of the little country roads but I figured there'd be no DUI cops 'way the heck out in the sticks.

Oh sure... there was one. :rolleyes:
