These folks are right. NYE is not an acceptible date for a fundraiser even it is legit. A free DJ on NYE = a kid with his bedroom stereo.
Both Steves are right ~ free gigs beget free gigs. Do one and the panhandlers will be popping out of the woodwork and ringing your phone off the hook.
I did one of those private fundraisers several years ago. It wasn't free but I gave 'em a break. Supposedly they were raising money for some guy who'd had a heart attack and needed money. To make a long story short, they had maybe 20 people show up. Ticket sales didn't even cover what they paid me, let alone what the rental house charged 'em.
