Ok I've heard the term a few times and then a friend of mine who is a single op said it the otherday that he is aspiring to become a WED guild wedding entertainment director.

I can't do any kind of search of anything on google or yahoo that would show where this is even worth it the money yet alone the college application, ive never had a bride ask me about it?

The concept looks neat but does it have any benefits.. tangible benefits?

If anything id take the book you make for the application and keep it in your home office, here are some wedding references, here are some of my colleagues references, etc

The WED Guild is Peter Merry's attempt at building a certification program for what he calls Wedding Entertainment Directors. It is a noble effort but, IMHO, a wasted one. I believe that it may be worthwhile to do the work required for the certification but, do it for yourself and waltz it in front of DJs you know and whose critisim you respect and want.

I honestly do not think that brides and grooms look for certifications or even association memberships. Many just care about the price and those that really care about quality will get references from you.

Just my humble opinion.

The biggest tangible benefit is, when in client meetings, you can explain the entry qualification and show how you have passed them. Some clients may see the benefit, some may not.


Tom (GoodKnight) is partially right. Few, if any, clients are looking for WED people. What Peter is trying to create is something like a Good Housekeeping seal of approval.

Please note that Good Housekeeping didn't become a stamp of approval overnight. The WED is in it's infancy. Maybe someday it will be significant. When that day comes, it may be advantageous to say "WED member since 2008".

You do not need to be a single-op. However, WED certification applies to individuals, not companies. Individual DJ/MCs of a multi-op may become WEDs and use the WED logo on the company card, if it also has their name on it. The company cannot use the WED logo or certification to apply it to the entire company, unless every DJ/MC in the company is a WED member.
 
Hi. My name is Anna and I am a mobile DJ. If you were looking for someone who paid for the title of Wedding Entertainment Director(TM), I apologize. As far as certifications are concerned, I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Purdue University. That is about as relevant to DJing as the WED(TM) certification.

Now that's taken care of...what genres of music do you like?

Is that new Dave? I am sure Peter told me a while back anyone multi doesn't qualify. It's been a while and the memory isn't as good as it used to be though
 
That's the way I heard it from Peter. I'm not sure if that was on a phone call, or a podcast, or what.

Also, I'm not a WED yet, so I can't be sure. This may have changed, but I doubt it.

This too will pass! Yes some DJs will send their hard earned money into the wishing well, and many will claim great benifits that were gained from it then they too will disappear into the abyss!
 
Rev- See in the initial post i didnt really bash the concept if you are working toward WED certification when you meet potential clients if you mention that then you mention here are 5 past references, 5 references from other wedding vendors and even a reference from a WED certified wedding entertainment director, the meat there in all of that seems so much more valuable than the "certification"

I think the missing piece will be national attention paid to WED. If, and it's a big IF, Peter gets on national tv, that will be the payoff.

Note to all: I'm not a WED member... yet. I don't yet qualify. Eventually I will qualify, and when I do, the application is going in.
 
After checking out the website and some of the many other websites this guy made up to increase the amounts of websites that link to this one website, I don't see the benefit to submitting my life story, a $200 fee, and $900 per year to have some guy's approval of my work. But as they say, your mileage may vary.

But, I get a poorly formatted page. It seems that the WED certification does not mean that you know anything about web design.

It is a sub-page of the page titled "DJs"

Whomever the editor of that section is, decided that these folks are in a class by themselves, and made them their own page to link off.

Meanwhile, folks who are not in that certification get listed in the page titled "DJs"
(someone from this board was added w/o even applying....hehehe)
Pretty kewl, huh?

I think it is funny that so many DJ's really don't know what to do with their money other than send it too another DJ for that DJ's approval.

Ok I am going to start a certification process of my own for DJs, just send me your life story, 10 references (I don't care who they are from, I won't check them anyway), a picture of yourself with real DJ gear, and $500. For this you will get a framed 8X10 Photo Shop certificate with President Clinton's signature on it. And I will put you on our "My Space" page as a friend!

Those with a mental capacity over the age a 15 year old need not apply!
