Folks,

I got a popup tonight asking me to install SP 3. I didn't do it because the install window had a message that recommended backing up my machine before doing so. I don't like the sound of that. The last time Shirl installed an update, her Pinnacle utility wouldn't work anymore.

My machine has been working fine. It's a bit shy on RAM but that's on the to-do list.

What you folks think? Is the SP 3 really necessary?

From what I've heard SP3 has some problems and people are going back to SP2. I have the update prompt (Yellow shield) on the tool bar and I want to get rid of it since I don't plan on installing SP3 until I hear it's working properly. Hope the tech savvy guys chime in ;).

I just disabled automatic updates, and the little yellow shield went bye bye.

I updated to SP3 the other day with absolutely no problems, but a coworker did the same thing and had trouble with a few select programs. Seems to me that it is affecting systems differently....?

I have SP3 installed on this machine for about 3 weeks now with no issues. I haven't tried the other machines in the house with it yet. Although I own a couple of XP discs this machine was installed with a copy that already had SP3 "added" to it so I don't know if that made a difference or not

I've been using it for quite some time now, and no issues whatsoever -- all programs work the same, no speed issues, etc.

Service Pack upgrades always tell you to backup before installing -- that is standard fair.

Also, I always have upgrades turned on (mine is set to prompt me first), so I likely had 90% of SP3 already on my machine. The install only took a couple minutes.

It may be fairly standard fare as well, but after I installed it a while back I started having system problems which mysteriously disappeared when I uninstalled it!

Nah, I was really at the faregrounds :sqlaugh:

Ok just to let everyone know....

If you do an update using the SP3 install onto your system with SP2 then you will have NOTHING but hassles all the time

doing a clean install with SP3 intergrated with the Operating system then no worries at all

now this I have tested before we even deployed sp3 (must be clean system)

as for updates if you look carefully enough we already have sp3 installed (have a look at www.belarc.com for full details)

hope that helps

I've been using SP3 on both of our home computers since it came out, and when I put a new HD in my friend's laptop I upgraded him to SP3. I've not had a single issue.

Ok Brian was it a FRESH install or a download added over top of SP2 ?

I know after 30x systems that I have installed sp3 over sp2 that nothing but faults

a fresh installed system that has sp3 no faults at all....

so can you tell everyone as I think you have had a fresh install not one that is downloaded and installed over sp2

have a nice day

I installed SP3 over SP2 on this machine 2 days ago and have had no issues yet

It was not a fresh install, I went to the Microsoft website on 2 computers at my house and my friend's laptop (yes we fixed it) and installed it. Works like a charm, I've had ZERO issues.

I went ahead and installed it on the 5th and have not had any problems at all.

as I said above you will have problems if its not a fresh install as with the upgrades here we are having big hassles - even the microcrap rep is looking into it as he has never seen so many problems and after he installed sp3 over sp2 he found more than his share of bugs and faults (crashes) BSOD

so you can hass this out till your blue in the face but thats why I say its best for a fresh install then you wont get any problems...

I installed it at home and many computers at work and it works like a charm. You might want to wait a month or two more but eventually you will need to upgrade at some point to get the new security patches in SP3.

Also, I will like to add that those of you the disable Auto updates be sure and run the updates manually every two weeks or so.
