Young...what's your experience with PODDS? a lot of material there?

Are you buying from them...How are you playing the music?

I have not used the PoDDS service yet. You have to buy credits in advance and the downloads have only recently come down in price. I had a hard time paying $1.29 for the same song I could get for $.99 from iTunes, I know it's not much. Also the files are a weird mp3 format so I have to burn them to cd and then add them to iTunes library which means more cd's. I couldn't get my Mac to read the files directly from my home network folder or memory stick.

Do you really think a radio station could survive getting new music just once a month? Look at any song on your local station and see when it was on any monthly service...I'd be willing to bet most songs they were playing months before it appeared on a monthly CD.

Most radio stations get their music in the following ways:

- One of the download services for radio stations, like MPE or MusicCrypt
- A weekly service, like HitDisc or RPM
- Label service (get CDs directly from the labels before the song goes for adds)

why is it that people on MBs always talk in terms of black & white? No I dont think radio stations use PO exclusively, but that is what they are intended for. The largest radio station company,Clear Channel, uses the "prophet" syestem for distributing its music to all of the stations. Every month when I worked at PO I would send a master cd that had every format to prophet. That cd went out on the same day that MSR went out to the plant. We can agree to disagree a out what service is best for different individuals, but please know that I know what I am talking about.

Having worked for and been apd/md of a CC station "Prophet" is an inhouse system, Austin calls the shots on whats in and out and the people there and the vp's of programming around the country the John Ivey's, Tom Poleman's, formerly Jeff Wyatts, Jeff Kapugi's, etc all have a say in what gets played at a cc station LONG before RPM, PO, HIT DISC, TM etc get close to putting a song out these are the programmers who have record reps waiting every week to do music calls in person with new music.

I certainly am sure you know what you're talking about, but i do as well. I think that to say Promo Onlys main focus on radio is to say that the New England Partiots main focus is ice hockey they both sports right?

Promo Only is to radio what a Model T is to a Ferrari.

Not to disrepect PO. It's a good service. All I'm sayin' is, it's not a radio service.

Jones TM formerly TM Century originally Century 21 was a Radio Service for more than 10 years before it serviced Mobile DJ's...In the late 80's Hit Discs for new Music and Gold Discs for Format Specific Libraries was new and Revolutionary for Radio the downside being stations had to start paying for new music..TM Century was a merger in the Mid 90's between Century 21 and TM Programming..Century 21 was started in the Late 80's by Dave Scott who later Founded Scott Studios..Prime Cuts is a Version of Hit Discs designed for Mobile DJ's...Up through the Mid 80's,stations received all their music from the Labels..Even small stations received tons of Promo 45's...The first service for Mobile DJ's was called Hot Hits, originally a Jukebox Service and very primitive by Today's Standards..In the early 90's though it was great as it partially eliminated trips to the Music Store in the Mall... To any one complaining about Prime Cuts Subscription Rates,In the early 90's a Radio Subscription to weekly Century 21 Hit Discs was around $200. a Month..Stations paid it to get the then new In House Technology known as "No Noise".

My point was why would they program for radio stations when hardly any radio stations rely on a monthly service to get music? As someone said later, the big stations have songs often before we even put them out and we're a weekly service. Point being is that "4 Minutes" song. We ran it as soon as we got it...and I heard it on the radio 2 weeks before we ran it. From what I know it has yet to be on any monthly service.

I'm going to add a comment which is slightly off-track of the discussion - but
a passionate issue with me........... I worked in radio for 30 years - programming,
engineering, etc....... so how natural and good the music sounds has always been
an obsession with me...........I've also been in the mobile business for 30 years......

My biggest gripe with PO - SOUND ! Some wiseguy(s) there have decided that
PO should be the loudest service on radio........They are OVERPROCESSING - music
that was already overprocessed when they got it..........I've been comparing the
audio quality between RPM, Prime Cuts, and PO tonight - and they seem to go
in that order from best to worst ......PO is from 2 - 6 DB hotter than RPM - and
probably the rest of the CD's in my library.......... So kick in a promo only song
after a library standard - and BOOOMM - It's too loud - and harsher, and less pleasing
to the ear because of the additional compression, clipping, normallizing, gain boosting,
and what ever the crap they do to it to make it loud on the radio...........

I've tried to talk to PO several times about that, and they have been disrespectful
to me........they will not listen to their customers who demand a return to natural
(as possible) sound - to be passed on from the record companies - to the DJ's
and radio stations - So after about 15 years and around $5,000 of my money - Promo Only - GOODBYE ! Don't write or call - your renewal app is going into the circular file !!

I'm not suggesting you're wrong, nor attacking your right to support or not support the service(s) of your choice, but, your 30 years of experience should include experiencing how the "standards" have evolved, over time. Promo Only CDs will sound "louder" compared to a CD mastered in the 80s, but will they sound "louder" than cds produced this year? I don't believe all of your "library standards" sound the same either, compared to Promo Only or each other - they will vary, depending on the year of release.

I don't think any of the services listed, nor record labels themselves, would respond well to a "demand" (your word) for changes in mastering, unless it were a widespread complaint. How many other users agree with you? Are there users who like the music mastered "loud"? Other than not complying with your demand, how has Promo Only been disrespectful to you?

Thanks for the info people.

I'm on ERG and have been thinking of switching over to Promo Only, just because it's cheaper.

I've been watching their releases and comparing and noticed that they are not fast as ERG.

I was thinking of changing over in the spring of 2008 and still haven't got around to it. (Just haven't found the time.)

Maybe I should stay where I am. Comments?

We can thank the radio broadcast industry for the overly processed audio that we now experience. In an effort to develop signature sounds through manipulating the audio's dynamics and frequency response, we have now raised a generation of listeners who don't know how audio is suppose to sound in a "natural" state. Therefore if it's not loud with all the artifacts that go with it, the music won't sound right to younger ears. Adoption of the mp3 hasn't helped matters of audio purity either!

If you are thinking about switching to PO for price might I recommend Prime Cuts instead. PC has a firm shipping schedule where PO just send discs when they feel like it. I was with ERG, then PO and now PC. ERG was expensive, PO was on it's own schedule and so far only one hiccup with PC.

Have been so happy w/ Prime Cuts since switching over 4 yrs ago...
(Gosh, has it been that long?!). Jim & Rob are still awesome Reps for an incredible product.

Funny thing - Promo Only is still the one music source that the ADJA insists on staying with. It's a shame when personalities get in the way of helping all of it's members. At least, that's how it seems to be...

Just my $0.02....

Cheers,

Joe

yes I have used all the above and then found Primecuts USAfinding the best of the best. Fast forward to moving to Canada 6 yrs ago and not allowed to use Primecuts in Canada I lobbyed, begged and pleaded with Jim Weisz shortly after arriving here. Jim tipped me at MBLV 2 yrs ago that it was about to happen. Yes my neighbors on Vancouver opened PRimecuts Canada and I have joined as a happy subscriber ever since.

True Joe. It's an issue like that when it becomes more about personalities and not what's best for the members. I see Prime Cuts as being the premier music service in the DJ industry. When the discussion is brought up, more DJ's appear to be using prime cuts. I've read issues involving ADJA and Prime Cuts directly from those two businesses in heated debate on other boards. Who's right, or who's wrong doesn't really matter but not having Prime Cuts as a benefit is a loss.

I know that Prime Cuts wants to be the only subscription service for the ADJA but then again the ADJA wants to be the only DJ members benefit subscription service as well, so I can understand the friction. I guess that's one benefit ADJA members will have to do without.

I know that Prime Cuts wants to be the only subscription service for the ADJA

Ron,

Not sure where you got that info but it's not true at all. I'm all for the different associations giving their members as many benefits as possible and as many choices as possible between vendors. I personally wrote the proposals to the ADJA and never in the proposal did it say we should be the only music service sponsor of the ADJA.

Also, I can't say for sure (I'm at home so I don't have access to the proposal) but I think in the proposal or the letter that accompanied it I suggested that we not be the only music service of the association so the members could have discounts with multiple music services and then they could choose who to go with.

I just wanted to clear that up so there's no confusion.

Jim,
Thank you for the correction. As one hears things they tend to get twisted a bit. Maybe I was mistaken and it was Promo only that wanted the exclusive. Either way hearing directly from you clears that up. I would guess that the ADJA has no reason not to offer your subscription service to it's members.

Again, my apologies for the misunderstanding.
