Field Day 6/3 Last School Gig

So today was the last school gig of this school year and it was a blast. I didn't know what to expect. Initially they told me 100 kids at a time, then changed their minds and decided to let all 400 go at once for the full 3 hours and i was like AHHH, but it was a good gig. Very hot (bout 95), very windy and then clouds threatened (hence the bags in the pic). Didn't get any crowd pics since my camera's batteries died early (damn rechargeables) but it was a great success and despite the inflatables, we had a solid dance area the whole time and lots of requests. I did get into a bit of a pissing match with the inflatables guy who, when i offered him a card and asked for one so i could recomend him, he got pissed off about how DJs don't do anything and get paid just as much as they did but theyre doing 10X the work...I won't go into detail but i gave him an Arnoldo rant about DJs. Kids had fun and the EONs held up well. Why did I use them, well my excuse is gonna be i thought it might rain and i didnt wanna ruin the HPRs, but mainly i wanted to test em out since i haven't run them as mains in 6 months.

And no, i didnt have the skirting because the wind wreaked havoc on everything all day. Kids didn't care.
 
Ryan your G2s were probably more than adequate for that job. I know you have some great passive stuff and some mackie and QSC I believe but your G2s arent cheap-o either its not like gemsound or American Audio..

Id be willing to bet the ******* from the inflatable company wasnt the "owner" If you want to build a relationship find their shop introduce yourself to the owner offer to refer them and say what a great job his guy did there at that event (Totally lie and say he was a pleasure to work with) kill em with kindness. Inflatable places are good for referalls in both directions, although mine is pretty mad at me because we used to rent dancefloor from them all the time and now we're buying our own mwahhahahaha


anyway dude sorry your batteries died but overall its a classy set up for a literally outside field job. And if the kids had fun you had a great gig
 
Are u running the jbl eon differently now than in the past. Are u getting better sound out of them. I been fooling around w/my eq on my prodigy b-52 mixer and it seems to me if I cut out the mids at around 9o'clock the eons sound better and less distorted. My main setup now is two bose L1 w/ double base bins.
 
After checking out some of your other post about gear I would have bet money u would have used at least one sub for that gig.

I dont know about that because this is probably a background music mc some games kind of event for really little kids. They were also calling for t-storms and it was a day time job so im sure Ryan didnt have all the help he'd like. The G2's were probably adequate. You can put a drivespace in front they now make one for powered speakers

Albeit some may cringe most of our djs run a sonicmaximizer in front and it sounds plenty good to us
 
Well heres a little update. First of all, even I would normally use at least one if not both of the 15" subs for a gig this size but i'm very glad I didn't. First of all, I was intending on playing for 100 kids at a time and just playing like some bob sinclair and hannah montana, u know party music. Then they released all of the kids and i was like oh snap and THEN as it turns out, the kids were more interested in dancing, which I took as a compliment. Power was a bit of a concern for me as I had to run a 150' line to a trailer as using one of the generators wasn't happening with me. That run alone cost me valuable juice. The EONs sounded fine and this was the first time I ever cranked them up, i trimmed the highs and boosted the lows and they sounded balanced and even gave me a little ground vibration. One of my biggest issues was the dust-like sand that now covers all my stuff. I have a laptop full of it, a rack full of it and all my gear is dusty. Subs would have been a NIGHTMARE, luckily my handy air compressor, a paintbrush and some 409 will save me.
 
As for the inflatables people, the guy i spoke to was the owner, checked the website. Its ok, we work with another company locally and they feed us a decent amount of kids parties and are a PLEASURE to work with. www.partieseverafter.com I'm good actually. I'd rather not have my company associated with someone like him, even if he werent the owner, if their company puts people like him in the field with their T-shirt on, then i don't want a part of it. My company is built on customer service, not bit*hing over a couple bucks.
 
ok,,, I'll pick on the yellow and orange power cords....... Also the 150 foot run should not be a problem if you carry some 12 gauge 100 foot power cords in your van in case of the need.

Sounds like all went well, and I too hate the sand and gear combo...
 
Yea, running the power wasn't a problem. I carry 4 YellowJacket 12G 100 footers with me to outdoor gigs like this. Never seen any solid blacks like that. I have plenty of black cables i could have run to the speakers but honestly, i was just lazy. Those kept me from even having to coil anything. If u notice, i didnt even zip-tie the cables back, just wrapped them instead. For the amount of play time and $ this gig yielded, I wasn't too concerned with bringing out all the stops, but i still wanted to provide a quality show.

I have 100 foot 12 gauge cords in black, green and yellow.... I use the green when I am outside like last Friday and ran my cord through the grass.... black most of the time and yellow if it is in a travel zone where people might trip over it....

And I am NOT picking on you,. BUT even cheap gigs you should do it just like you would the highest priced gig. For one reason, you never know who will be there. What if, for example one of the parents came by and their daughter was getting married?

Also, I know how you feel about cheaper gigs, but the bottom line is I took that gig, it was my desision to do so and NOT the clients fault, so they should get the same level of time and effort as the wedding I took....

Its cool...just 2 months later :p I've actually invested this summer in power options and bit the bullet and bought 400' of black 12G cords and a couple tan colored ones for runs around my set in environments like that. The black will show up well, which is good because i can use it for professional gigs indoors and it still be visible outdoors on gigs like this one where people can be walking directly through the path of the cords. I'm also looking into some of those drive-over cable coverings for use on academic rally dates.
