Alright so I like Vista even better than Ubuntu these days (you can blame Rick for that one 
) I've been booting it as my default OS for a good while now. Something that's bothering me is Vista uses the hard drive for what seems to be no reason.
If I turn on the computer and leave it at the log in screen 2 minutes later Vista is going gang busters on the HD. The little HD read light stays on for a good 5 minutes and doesn't even blink! The same thing happens if I leave the computer idle for a few minutes, the HD goes loco.
Now I do realize Vista has an indexing service which looks for files and reads the text in some files to make searching easier but why is it constantly doing this? Indexing is the only reason why I could think of the HD reading like that but my files don't change all that much from day to day. Sure I download backups and a few pictures here and there but nothing that would take that long to index. Asides Vista isn't capable of indexing the contents of my backups, the largest files which are .tar.gz.
Doesn't Vista read it's own time stamps to determine what to reindex?
