I was going through the basement looking for a videotape I needed to digitized and ran across this. The Star DJs - Let’s Dance All-time Popular Party Hits VHS videotape. I might force my son to watch it. Or maybe sell it on eBay along with 50 unopened exercise videotapes, lol. I can’t believe what we did in the 90s’ but karaoke did workout well. And originally though that karaoke was going to be a fad.

Here is the link somebody already beat me to it. I will not confirm or deny that I know how to do most of the dances on the videotape. My kids found a video of me teaching the electric slide with a headset mic, they didn’t know I could dance. Really I can’t but given enough money it’s amazing what you can do.

Let me tell you though the MC’s voice on the videotape is super annoying. I can’t imagine four hours of it with the highly choreographed dances. Then at the end of the tape they want to sell you all sorts of T-shirts, Tour jackets, party props & etc. I cashed in for a number of years, still have my tux’s hanging in the closet. Of course I’ll never fit in them again.

I love me some Johnny James for that very reason. He was the epitome of the late 80s/early 90s mobile DJ.

Aside from that, there are some well-known names in the credits on that video. Where are they now? Johnny James Murphy sells real estate in Arizona. Mario Panicucci passed away very unexpectedly in February at the age of 50. The DJ in the video is Paul Viola... still in the business. Jeff Scott Gould is in the credits as one of the "Party People"... these days, he's Jani's right-hand man at SCE. Laura Pavilicek is one of the "Party People" too... she and Randi Rae (the mitzvah queen of New Jersey and the Production Coordinator/Casting and Wardrobe person in this video) are still working at Instinctive Event Group.

Mike Walter mentions Star DJs in his podcasts pretty frequently... it's where he got his start as well, and while the skits and dances may be cheesy now, the marketing that Johnny James was doing to promote that company was crazy innovative back then (case in point: Star DJs used to run TV informercials as a means to promote their company and recruit new talent). The DJ industry wouldn't be as successful as it is now without some of these people doing what they did back then.

Thanks for sharing this.
