If you've ever DJ'ed a local bar/club type place how to keep from becoming a boring DJ with stale sets? Sooner or later the regulars get to know you and your sets very well.

Once upon a time, I took over a local resident gig and got to know all the customers. After a couple of nights, I was getting compliments say "You aren't boring like the old guy"

Now, I'd personally heard the previous DJ spin a few nights and though he did well with nicely rounded out sets. I didn't see anything boring. This was in my younger days when I first started out, I was and am still known for throwing in relitivley unknown songs and the occasional oddball song. Heck, I had a group of biker doing the humpty dance, picture that. :D

I guess all in all when working a local joint with the same clientel day and day out, try your best not to become predictable.

What do you do to keep them coming back?

That's funny Dan,

I actually have Carolyn impersonators, they come in the bars and mimick me when they get up to sing. Fling their hair back do the commercials I do it's too funny.

This is what I do. I email and mail out my calendar every month. With their first calendar they get a business card magnet so they can put it on the fridge. I have people that work with me do my shows now but I still do it. I also have it in my website. I send out personal notes to them every month, sometimes jokes as long as they are not to controversial.

I have customers fill out a form for me with their address, email address, phone number and birthday. On their Birthday I make a banner with their name on it, I also pass a birthday card around the barfor everyone to sign, and I go to the store and buy a $3.00 cake. During the show have the entire bar sings happy birthday to them. It is a really big deal. Now people bring their friends and family just to have their birthdays with my company.

I also usually have atleast two parties a year. One is at the bar my companies anniversary party. I provide most of the food and some of my customers bring covered dishes. The place is always packed for it. I do it on an off day usually a Sunday so the bar makes money on that day as well. The other party I have at my house we have karaoke and DJ and of course food people bring their own bottle. I know all of this seems like alot of work and some of it is. I go out of my way to let my customers know that they are special and they not only come to my shows but they recommend me to their bosses for their holiday parties.

I also run different promotions at the bar during slow times of the year and give out company t-shirts for prizes. Mostly music trivia, sometimes questions about the bar, or what night is ladies night things like that.

Good stuff there, Carolyn.

I email my schedule every week to about 500 people. I include birthday shouts, music trivia, karaoke show schedule (I have 3 systems, 4 jocks).

I SHOULD do more 'interactive' stuff at my karaoke shows, and I USED to give out T-shirts, but I dunno, just haven't done that stuff in awhile.

Actually in one way Bounce is correct

I always say why play the same song more than once in a night

in a week I try not play the same song more than twice
always add new stuff - play old stuff etc

and as some say, you never quite know what is coming up next...

I never play the same mixes. My nights are always different. I'm bring into the club at least 20 - 30 new songs a week so the crowd never knows what to expect. Another thing that I never do is try to plan my music for the night. I play by the energy of the crowd and having a ton of new music that hasn't even made it to the airwaves yet makes for a very interesting time at the club for my customers.

You Are Revolutionary

I never play the same mixes...Another thing that I never do is try to plan my music for the night.

Admit it.

I just don't play regular gigs at the same place!

I figure that if I'm only there once in awhile instead of every week, it is more special to the crowd!

Works for me . . . and them!

This way I don't get tired of them, either . . .
