Just a vent....

Holiday party last night with teens in tow. Mixed it up pretty evenly, but I really felt sad for today's kids when an adult packed dance floor was mocked in the background by the teen table during a George Benson song.

Have they any clue as to what they're missing with today's throw away music?

70s & 80s R&B should kick ass at any age. It's a pity.

Mocking has become a cultural trend among youth this days. I see it happening at every event.
"clowning", "capping" and making fun of others is just gives them a feeling of being 'in'.

I sadly agree with this previous statement. Our youth have had very little in their life to prove to them "they are special". No self esteem is a massive problem in, not only them, but parents as well.

"Where is the love..." (Black Eyed Peas)

I seem to remember kids in my generation mocking our parents for listening to Lawrence Welk, Jackie Gleason Orchestra, etc.

But we would never do it in front of them (we knew better). Instead, we would reserve those kind of comments and actions to when we were with our peer group.

Now, it's a whole different ballgame......sigh! :(

You think that's bad?

Yeah I try to slip a few of those in there too. Still if there are a some in the audience that do appreciate it, I simply tell the ones complaining, the world does not revolve around them - usually they are young.

How'd ya like to be this guy?

Stupidity is most often terminal.

Just a side note...

I performed at a Jr. High dance a couple of years ago in my hometown. I knew the lady who hired me and, being a small town, knew many of the staff and kids.
I played the normal top 40 stuff loud enough to give myself a headache and my wife ran interferance for me taking "requests".
At some point about half way through the evening I played "A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong. While the song was playing one of the folks who had hired me told me, "You can't play that!"
(I'm a big boy. I smiled and let it continue)

Point is this...I could play Baby, Got Back, Shake ye tailfeather, Get low, etc... and the sponsors didn't mind but when I played a classic (by the way the dancefloor was full of people dancing to Louis) I got my music programming skills slapped.

THE ADULTS WERE THE PROBLEM...NOT THE KIDS!
I won't play for them again...I told them why.

DJ Bob, I'm gonna go out on a limb, and say there may be a few more issues that happened that night that may have forced you to remove yourself from the school. However if it was me, and I got told that my programming skills were subpar, let the song play, then continue along the way, after all we are playing for the guests, and the sponsors do foot the bill.

If that was the only issue no prob. One night I had a parent that questioned a songs lyrics although clean, I did accept her request and did better.

what gets me is when they, the adults tell me not to play any of that sexuallay suggestive stuff and I play Marvin Gaye "Let's Get It On" and watch to see if they come up to me and they are smiling and swaying to the music...

Dumb Adults!! LOL

Amen...our kids see a double standard.

And, by the way, BOUNCE...That was the ONLY negative thing that happened all night. The dance floor was full all night and the kids were having a great time. I do cater to what my clients want. My reason for no going back is that type of "criticism" can grow into an "artistic control" issue I refuse to deal with. :sqlaugh: You're "limb" just snapped, enjoy the landing...LOL
