Last night I had a small gig to provide a PA and background music for a client appreciation dinner/comedy show for a local financial advisement firm. It was a 3-hour event for less than 50 people at a local country club. Load-in and load-out was just a single short trip with a small cart. Set up and tear-down were 15-minute efforts. All I did was play an auto-mixed Spotify playlist I had made the day before. I didn't live mix but still got several kudos for the music selection.
I think what made it enjoyable was that the firm treated just like one of their clients. I mingled with crowd before dinner, seated with them during dinner, and afterwards, received one of the swag bags they had made for their clients. I felt so much like one of the guests that I was caught off-guard when I received a nice tip afterwards. Of course, it is possible that this was partly a ploy to recruit me as a potential client. Although I fit their client demographic, I did not get the vibe I was being recruited. I just left with a nice feeling of genuine appreciation.
