External Hard Drive Recommendations Please.

Well, I'm dagerously close to completely filling up my "back up" external hard drive. I'm looking to replace it with one that's no less than 500 GB. I want something fast and very compact. Anyone have any recommendations? Please include what you like about the unit you're recommending as well as what you don't like (if anything). THANX! -Z-
 
I own 4 Western Digital "My Book" H/D's.

(2) 500gb & (2) 750gb drives. So far there flawless. love them.
 
I agree with Precision I have two 500 gb Books and had one drop 2 feet to the concrete and it kept on ticking.
 
I like Seagate because of the warranty, I own E-Books, WD passports and Seagates all have worked flawlessly! TB are available now for less than what 160's cost me a few years ago so get TB's and you will have room later on for updates.
 
The last one I purchased was the 320! Does the 500 need the splitter to run or does it do ok on a single USB port?
 
I have never heard of an unreliable external hard drive, but I would stick with the big guys who actually make the drives: Seagate and Western Digital. We have lots of the little WD Passports bouncing around in users laptop bags all over the world. We also have a couple of the WD MyBooks that run 7x24 attached to desktops and even some servers. The USB powered Passport has no cooling but is small and rugged. The MyBook is externally powered and fan cooled at the expense of being larger and not really designed for portability.
