DJing for free? Sounds very... Democrat Party!😂 I’m currently in the process of shutting down my DJ business, but when I first started it, I had just retired and needed something to keep my mind and body active. I didn’t really need the money, but made a decision NOT to do FREE events, and to charge a rate similar to that of other DJ’s in the area. This is why... There are a LOT of good DJ’s out there who actually make their living from DJing. I decided if I charged a significantly lower rate than other DJ’s, or charged nothing at all, it would be unfair to DJ’s who needed paying gigs. I thought it would not be good for potential customers to think you could easily find a free or cheap DJ. Now in all honesty, the customers who consider using free or cheap DJ’s are generally not your top of the heap customers anyway, but out of respect for those DJ’s who honed their craft and struggled to save for their gear, that I wasn’t going to price myself unfairly just because I was in a financial position to do so. Of course, if you’re gonna operate a legitimate business, you need to at least break even. And there are tax advantages to operating a legit business. I’ve done a few free events playing modern Christian music for churches that had ZERO budgets for entertainment, but those were events no other DJ’s in my area would have had an interest in anyway. I built a niche business DJing for non-profit fund-raisers and political events, and I can assure you, they ALL had pretty large budgets to PAY for venues, food and entertainment. Some try to pay as little as possible, but they’ll pay the going rate if you’re good at those kinds of events. I’m a good MC too, so that helps when you’re competing with DJ’s who can only mix music. Covid essentially killed off my business as the kinds of events I did have almost completely dried up.

I’m not criticizing or judging anyone who wants to be a free DJ, but just wanted to give another perspective.😊

Welcome aboard!
I don't DJ for free, although when my taxes are done this year, my accountant may disagree with me😄

Hi bobcat i really get what your saying and its all correct . I do respect Other DJ's enough that I make sure I'm not taking from someone getting paid for Dj events I always make sure no one has requested a dj gig at my events or bin offered one . I have other Dj buddy's I invite to do sets to and they can except tips if they choose to. I do allot of events that I set up I pay for food and supply locations . So an example I do forest clean up events with volunteers . so we camp out for the weekend I bring in food venders who supply meals they except tips and if any expenses left over I cover for them .to thank all my hard working helpers i dj for them and supply camping in places normally closed to camping the perks of my gov job is access to millions of acres of land . I hope this helps with your concerns/

Mix charges for his events, but ends up generally in the red, so "free" would probably cost him less ...
