Until now, I have been exclusively CD-based in my library and rig. I recently purchased a Denon DN-D4500, but even after looking at the instruction manual, I can't figure out how to get mp3's properly formatted on a disc to play on this thing.

Anyone have this unit and have success getting it to read mp3 discs?

I keep getting a "FORMAT ERROR" mssg in the display when inserting the discs.

After playing with different file-name conventions (specified in the manual), and mp3's ripped from different sources, I still can't get files to be read in the player. 6 or so cdr's later into the process, it's kind of discouraging.

I'm completely new to ripping to MP3's, and to ID3 tagging as well.

The MP3 decoders, versions of ID3, etc that are supported are listed in the manual, a screenshot of which is included here.

Questions:

What software suites should I look into for ripping into files that will be accepted by this unit?

Will the same software for ripping include the required generators for ID3 tags?

What do you guys use for digitizing your libraries?

Thanks!

First off, are you using CD-Rs, or CD-RWs? Stick with CD-Rs.

Secondly, make sure you're burning data discs when you put your mp3s onto each disc. Also, be sure that you're closing the CD "session"; there's probably an option to leave it open or close it in your CD-burning program. If you leave it open, only your computer will be able to read the disc. The Denon player won't be able to.

And don't burn them at Max Speed, I've been burning them at 4X instead of 52X. I have not had a problem with it (Knock on wood).

Right now, Im just using windows to burn (select files, rt click, send to -> CD-ROM).

As for closing/finalizing disc, thats a good point too. The windows process says it is finalizing, but I don't know if its talking session or disc.

What software apps do you guys use?

Im not using any right now to burn... have used Roxio Creator Classic and Nero in the past. Any recommendations.

Also, for the ripping of tracks - what apps will rip with artist/album/title info as well as the file data itself?

I have seen that WinAmp Pro (paid upgrade) seems to be pretty full-featured in this area and even let's you specify naming conventions for files (very handy since it looks like the DN-5000 requires certain file name convenitons).

Any suggestions on buring with ID3 tag info, or is all that added after the fact to the file?

I'm using Nero and all my files have been tagged using Tag & Rename before a disc is burned. No problems viewing the info on the Denon's display.

I also used Nero to burn when I used a Denon CD/MP3 player.

As far as ripping goes, Audiograbber has served me well for the past 10 years. It will also create tags for you based on the parameters that you set, and it's free. No need for WinAmp pro.

Okay sweet. So:

1) Audiograbber to rip (I have been using CD-DA X-Tractor ofr over a year now with no issues - another great free one).

2) And dedicated suite like Nero to burn.

I suspect you guys are right... probably an issue with the way the files are burned or with how windows is handling/closing the discs out, if at all.

DJ SVO: "Tag & Rename" - I am assuming this is a feature in Nero before you burn?

No

Even using Amazon or other tag databases there are mistakes (I don't like Various Artists or other junk in Artist Name) it let's you tag the files properly with the correct info. You can run batches by artists, album, etc.

Thanks for your help guys. After the input and after some playing with different apps and whatnot I finally got my first track (Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa,,, don't ask!) to be read and played on the unit.

Thanks again!
