The song "Hot, Hot, Hot" was originally Made and sang by Arrow a Calypsonian from Montserrat in the Caribbean. Buster Poindexter sang a cover and as it was more widely distributed in North America there was a misconception that BP was the original singer.
He came here to Houston while touring the Us to promote his new Album in the 80s. I was involved in that show. I met the man.
The following articles sheds light on this issue:
Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Hot_Hot_(Arrow_song)
New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/16/arts/music/16cassell.html?_r=0

I just needed to set the record straight. If you have never listened to the original do so. The You Tube audio versions suck. They lack the dynamics.

Another big hit he had was "Groovemaster"

Maybe so in your opinion, but I still prefer it. ;)
You are welcome to your preference. Just remember, if it is ever requested by someone from the Caribbean you better not play the BP Version unless you want them to dog you out! People from the Caribbean know how to do that well I am sure you will agree! :wink-new:

I also agree BP sounds better ... just like Grand Funk Railroad's Locomotion sounds better than Little Eva's version. Sometimes a remake is the better choice. But to each their own.

The only thing that should matter is what version my client's prefer...
what version they request, or what version they are familiar with.
(Aint nobody 'round here ever heard of that Arrow feller.)

As far as my own personal preferences, I'm with Steve on the remakes:

Committments - Mustang Sally
Beatles - Twist and Shout
Grand Funk - Some Kind of Wonderful
Joe Cocker - Feeling Alright
I Have Always Loved You - Whitney Houston
Save The Last Dance for Me - Michael Buble
The Who - Summertime Blues
Big Head Todd & the Monsters - Boom Boom

Most people consider Led Zeps first album, as the best cover band album ever. Then they went on to their own stuff.

I can't disagree -- they brought a whole new sound to older music, and made a great name for themselves. It also gave them the cash flow to reinvent themselves.

True, Ricky....
because they figured out the magic to a remake.
You have to pay homage to the original, and make it your own, without disgracing it.

That is not what has been done in this case. Hot , Hot, Hot by Arrow is a Soca song. That beat and feeling is no longer existent in the remake by BP. Besides which, just as how DJs frown on those who Pirate Music and Software, so do I on those who steal other Artists work or don't give them due credit. Arrow had to sue BP to put him in his place. Now BP has to pay the late Arrow's Estate the royalties. For that reason I do not play BPs version nor do I play Michael Bolton's version of "When a man loves a woman." This sentiment is also shared by all who I know in the Caribbean community The W.I., USVI, Boston, Canada, New York, Ct., Florida, DC, California and other Caribbean based communities.

How can you say you don't play it if your Client did not ask for it. Does that mean you don't play new songs on your own? Was there ever a comparison done between the two? I will wager you don't even own the Arrow's version, so how will the clients know? I doubt very much that someone would come up to you and say "Please play the BP version not the Arrow one." It is very easy to try and rationalize things by blaming the Client. The DJ is the one who needs to be creative without waiting on the Client's direction. However, like I have said before if you are going to play it for a Black audience especially if folks are from the Caribbean, you had better not play the BP version because they will laugh you out of the venue. You are much better off saying you don't have the song.

It would be better if you started some of the statements with "In my opinion .." as others may have a different and equally valid POV.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^ AGREED!!
Are you from the Caribbean? Have you lived in those communities? Have you Produced Dancehall Parties? Do you have that Rhythm? My friend I don't have to debate this fact with any naysayer. Even DrZinc said that the BPs Version sounds like a Karaoke Remake version and I agree. There are some things you just don't mess with and that is Soca and Calypso songs. They are unique to those peoples but available for others to enjoy! Thats it. I am not going to have some late comer to the game try and dictate my culture to me. I speak for both me and my fellow men. If you are open minded you don't go to Germany and try to dictate to those people their culture and History, instead you go to learn. You don't take someone else's creation and try and claim it as your own. Instead of being close minded try it sometime. First you will have to buy a legitimate copy. No one is trying to dictate culture to you.

The Arrow version may indeed be dear to your heart or soul ... HOWEVER, that does not mean it is the preferred version by others, nor is it necessarily the best sounding version to others.

I have the Arrow version, would have no problem playing it for those who prefer it, but have played the Buster version for some Jamaicans without anyone ever asking for the other.

To each their own ..

If there is one thing I'm certain of that is not opinion, is that you can't speak for anyone but yourself. And, you aren't my friend, nor am I a naysayer.

HOLY CRAP, dude. Turn the freak-out knob DOWN a few notches and think about what you're saying!
Nobody is dictating, we are simply expressing our opinion.
My heritage IS from Germany,
but you don't see me getting all worked up at people who don't like Polkas...or somebody else's REMAKE of a polka.
