I have a wedding coming up this Fall where the couple wants "spotlight service" for their grand intro. This will be an add on to the existing contract and I promised a price today. I am a one man show and would like to handle this solo but will charge enough to pay an assistant for that night if needed.

I have 2 questions.

(1): Can this be done well with 1 DJ? I am planning to use an Intimidator Spot 250 LED joystick controlled. Plan B is to rent a followspot and pay a helper.

(2): Anything else I need to consider?

Thanks

Do not try it, solo. I charge $150 for a followspot, which includes an operator. BTW, I had a problem with my Chauvet foilowspot at the Bat Mitzvah this past Saturday night. Grabbed out a Source Four Jr. Zoom and it worked just fine as an emergency backup.

There was a recent thread on this. I would not use the Intimidator Spot 250,a Joystick is not that easy to control. Use a Follow Spot or like Rick suggested a Source four.
You definitely need someone to help. Get it high over peoples heads so it shines down on the couple not in their face. Position it in the room when you can get them coming in at the entrance and follow them most of the way so they will end up walking just past you.
THIS IS SOMETHING FOR WHICH YOU HAVE TO GET SPACE/LOCATION. If you wait until you get there to do a setup based on where the Venue wants you, it may become a big problem.

+1 on the not doing it solo - especially if it's a moving person / people. I would also use a followspot (and not a Intimidator Spot) for something like this.

Rick...what happened to your Chauvet Followspot? Was this the one that got smashed recently?

It got dropped off a loading doc last year. Not sure what happened but the color wheel wasn't registered properly so you had half one color, half another. The SF isn't an optimal replacement (no dimming, no extra colors, it gets hot quick) but in a pinch ya do what ya gotta do.
