You could use Audacity, Soundforge, or Audition to record and probably clean up anything you find on the net,

Totally agree.
Even one song is NOT ok. Stealing is stealing. I shall not go into a great debate about it. Been there, done that already. In short - we're all professionals. Do it the right way and legally. We're supposed to be setting the example.
Download Audacity. Free and powerful editing program, it will record whatever you are playing on your computer. I have used it twice to record songs off of YouTube that simply could not be found anywhere else. I have also used the program to clean up songs, extend songs, do First Dance edits, etc.
