Remember when you didn't need foggers or hazers because everyone smoked
I'm sure glad those days are gone![emoji1] As an avid, life-long non-smoker, I'd have REAL difficulty performing in a smoke-filled room for 4+ hours at a time. I couldn't do it!

I remember the days of having carpeted speakers and opening the trailer a week after a gig and it still smelled like smoke, and also of having to shower when getting home from a gig because your hair smelled of smoke

I went to visit my brother last month, and he and his ex-wife (they still live together) both smoke. It was a tough visit because of the constant smoking. When I got home and opened my suit case... it reeked! I had to wash or dry clean everything. I guess it was worth it since I had not seen them in over 30 years, but I won't be going back any time soon... maybe in 30 more years (LOL).

Maybe he'll have multiple EXs living with him by then .... :)

Well, there is a law against having multiple spouses at the same time - I don't recall a law against having and living with multiple ex spouses.

It's worse for us ex-smokers. I hate it when I walk the dog and I can smell someone's cigarette somewhere in the area. Or pulling up to a stoplight and the smoke from another car is in smelling distance! It's temptation in one's face but the smoker doesn't realize it.

How would an AA member react to someone holding an open container under their nose?

I am going to verify what sort of fire detection system the gym has that I will be doing a school dance in, but I am also renting an Ultratec Radiance Hazer to use in the gym instead of a cheaper fogger/fazer/hazer. Has anyone had any experience with the ultratec hazer?

If it's a fog / haze machine, it will have the same issue. If the alarm goes off, you must evacuate the facility. At that point, you may be liable for the costs involved - in addition to breach of contract for causing the issue. I would make sure the facility understood very clearly that the fire dept needs to be on hand and if not, that they accept full responsibility.

Fog Machines are so 2004. They just are not feasible any more.

You can buy a 400 watt Fog Machine at Target for $35.00. They are selling them for Halloween.

I used my machine at a apartment complex Halloween party last year. That was the only time since 2012 I have used a fog machine at a gig. I usually bring it out on Halloween for the kids to look at while trick or treating. I set up a low lying fogger with dry ice....people think it's a cool effect on the front lawn.

I'm talking to the school district maintenance department on the fire systems. They maybe able to shut the 2 sensors off for us. My dad works in the operations and maintenance for the school districts here in Colorado so I got lucky in being able to have those contacts available.

The school approved the haze machine and they are aware of the concerns regarding haze. I would just feel more comfortable if the zones we are in were off.

Got a cheap one ,,,, if you want to keep the fog low,,,, get an old ice chest and some 2 inch aluminum pipe, drill it through the ice chest long ways and stick pipe through, seal it with silicone,,,, fill it with ice and blow fog through pipe! Fog will stay low!

I have this fun fog 50 buck machine ,,,, never set off any sensors yet this year! I use it quite often

The juice that this one uses is water based, and is supposed to be more eco friendly than the glycol mixes of long ago!

It is so harmless, you can drink it and save the weight of bringing the smoke machine out!

See here! One the members of Foghat showing how they made smoke back in the day!

This might be DJ Foggy Bottom!

Whoooooaa! That's gonna leave a MARK! Time for some Oxyclean!

I'm pretty sure you can't shut them off - hence the reason for the fire dept.

That's what I thought as well based on all of the research I did. I will get more details today and tomorrow from the school district and the school itself. If we don't use haze, it isn't the end of the world obviously, but if only 2 detectors in the whole gym (located on top of the doorways) are causing us not to use it, it makes me a little ticked off. I do understand though that having an evacuation mid dance would make me extremely mad so I am trying to balance the risk and trade-off. I am still learning as you can tell, so sorry if this is a dumb question. Would putting fans pointed at the smoke detectors eliminate most of the risk? In our home when I burn stuff cooking (rarely [emoji4]) I simply fan air at the smoke detectors to shut them off right, so why wouldn't fans pointed at the smoke detectors work in my situation? I don't think that would fall under the rules of tampering with a smoke detector since we aren't blocking it or covering it up. Again, sorry if this is a stupid question. I am looking at this from all angles...while being a bit stubborn I can admit.

Don't looks for ways around it - look for ways to work with it. Step 1 - either you accept the risk or they do. If they do not accept it, then I would leave them home. The risk of evacuation is not worth it IMO.

Fans pointed at the detectors may make them go off earlier than they would without the fans. If your typical home smoke detectors go off, the FD isn't coming. If the alarm sounds at the school, the FD is on the way regardless (unless they have someone on site). Additionally, some systems (even manned), the actual alarm will still trip - the sound will be silenced and it won't send the alarm notification but the lights will still be going off (the 'fire' strobes in fog are cool for a minute but they get annoying really fast).

I can almost guarantee that if the FD rolls and it's not a 'real' call, someone will be on the hook for paying for it - and if they come back multiple times, you can multiply that cost .. x2, x3, x4, etc.

There are no dumb questions on here. :)

Thanks for the info.

A lot will be riding on if they shut the system off which it sound like they are confident they can, but like you mentioned probably isn't possible.

I know the schools here have used fog in there musical productions and plays, but I am not sure what they have done to minimize evacuation issues.

I will look at our possibilities leading up the Saturday, and the day of I will go with the safest route that won't get us in trouble.

Update on this. So the school district said they could shut off the fire detectors for us as long as the school was willing to pay for the overtime fee for a mechanic (an employee from the same district) to come in and turn them off and on again over the weekend. Because this was a last minute cost, they said they couldn't pay for it (around $200) [emoji53]. Now I now for this school if they ask me back to ask in advance and include it in the price. Thanks again for the input.
