Many Chicago-area Bennigan's to close as parent files bankruptcy

Many Bennigan's restaurants in Chicago and across the country abruptly closed Tuesday after the company that owns the chain filed for bankruptcy.

S & A Restaurant Corp and some of its affiliates, which are popularly known as Bennigan's, Steak & Ale and Tavern restaurants, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, said a statement from Plano, Texas-based Metromedia Restaurant Group, which ultimately owns all three restaurant chains.

The statement didn't disclose the number of restaurants that are closing. Sheryl Randolph, a spokeswoman for Metromedia Restaurant Group, said the closure doesn't effect franchisee-owned outlets.

According to Bennigan's Web site, it has 21 locations in Illinois and another three in Northwest Indiana. But it is unclear how many are company-owned and how many are owned by franchisees.

Managers of Bennigan's restaurants across the country were awoken last night by midnight phone calls telling them to shutter their restaurants immediately, according to interviews with several restaurant managers.

Alphonso Prince, the general manager at the Bennigan's in Calumet City, said he received a call from his supervisor about 12:10 a.m. that all the company-owned restaurants were closing nationwide.

"They had been shutting down stores here and there. I never thought all stores," Prince, 33, of Gary, Ind., said in a telephone interview.

Two Bennigans locations along Michigan avenue were locked and empty at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, though both normally open by 8 a.m. for breakfast. Both restaurants posted signs on plain printer paper near their entrances announcing that they were closed.

Lights were on and a couple of employees could be seen milling around the restaurants at 225 N. Michigan Ave. and 150 S. Michigan, but no one answered knocks at their entrance doors-not even for coworkers. A woman who identified herself as a Bennigan's employee knocked in frustration at one location before giving up and walking away.

Caleb Kosek, 24, showed up for his first day of work as a Bennigan's server to find the 225 North Michigan location locked. He circled the building for a few minutes before passersby informed him that they had heard the restaurant chain was closed as of that morning.

"Wow," he said wide-eyed as he peeked into the empty restaurant.

Gerald and Elizabeth O'Boyle, who were visiting the city from Hamilton, Ontario, passed by the 225 North Michigan restaurant Monday evening to find it packed, they said. They figured its popularity was a good sign, and decided to return Tuesday morning for breakfast.

"This is highly unusual," Gerald O'Boyle said as he stood outside the closed restaurant. "I just can't fathom it."

Chapter 7 bankruptcy implies liquidation, not reorganization of a financially troubled company. That means the shuttered stores are not likely to reopen.

Too bad. :( I've heard it was a yummy place to eat.

So, where is Butters from "South Park" going to go with his family?

Why should they be different than the thousands of other restaurants and bars across the country?

If you think it's just nationwide? A recent article in The Bergen Record ( NJs largest paper) notes that over 1400 pubs have closed this year in London and surrounding areas. They quote the new smoking ban as well as the economy. They also note that this is the worst downturn in this business since the Great Depression.

Still think we're on the verge of a recession?

Still think the Smoking Ban isn't stealing the livlihood of privately owned businesses, and taking all the associated businesses, THEIR employees, and so on down the line with it?

Putzes and Sheep.......

So, all the corporate one size fits all strip mall food and restaurant chains are folding. Tch tch tch too bad.

The local neighborhood mom and pops who have hung on are making a coming back. Too costly to drive to those malls but walking or riding a bike to Luigi's is no problem.

Watch out Wally World. You're next. The neighborhoods are making a come back.

Cap, I don't know if I agree 100%, but I definitely don't mind some of these chain places going away. They are basically interchangeable, IMO....

Joe, I still disagree on the smoking thing. We go out MORE now that we don't have to worry about 2nd hand smoke so much. I enjoy myself much more.

Ducky: No big deal... it is just like all the other places... Applebee's, Houlighans', Chili's..... decent food, but nothing special.

Bennigan's
TGI Fridays
Pub 99
Bugaboo Creek
Joe's American Grill & Bar
Uno's
Chilli's

To me they are all about the same. The only good one in our area is Applebee's. Not because of the food so much but because when you walk in the front door in the entrance way they have a display of action pictures of Milford Fire. I am in about half of them. So I have my very own shrine at Applebee's. Every time my kids go in they show their friends the pictures of their dad. Makes me all warm inside.:sqlaugh:

As the old joke goes, "Now that's ONE" Papa, glad to hear it, but you ARE in the DEEP minority. If all the non-smokers did as they said they would, there wouldn't be a problem. As stated before, if non-smoking bars can be as successful as smokong bars, SOMEONE would have opened one and been successful prior to the ban.
It didn't happen....

You also said WE go out more. Should I assume by this you mean you and the family? To, say, establishments that concentrate on food as opposed to late night entertainment and the bar?

I'm NOT making that assumption, I'm just asking. Those places that mostly food oriented ( and usually close by 10 or 11 anyway probably HAVEN'T suffered as much. It's the bars, clubs, and mom and pop taverns that have gotten nailed.

Bennigan's service and quality had been on the downfall in Houston, it used to be great up to 2003 then it started heading South.

Friday's is head and shoulders above any of these places!!!! They do not even belong on this list.

I think Fridays is EXACTLY like those places.... right in the middle.

Don't make me make a special trip to Philly to knock some sense into your head:sqlaugh::sqwink:

I think it all depends on the area where you are. The Fridays in my little town is probably the best place to eat in town. It is about 5 miles from my house and I am normally there at least once a week if that tells you anything (that is a long walk just to eat somewhere!!!).

The Applebees, Ruby Tuesdays and Chilis have no where near the service or quality of food that Fridays has. I have never once gotten a bad meal there.

Now, THAT place is TERRIBLE!

But I love Chili's, and Applebee's is just OK....
