While Steve is correct some test system have been operating but not in a highly populated area or any appreciable mileage. Just put things in proportion my brother-in-law drives 1/4 million miles or more every 2 years. And he is not on the road everyday. One trip to NYC with the traffic, people crossing in front/rear/side all at the same time, your view blocked to traffic lights, multiple signals stating traffic restrictions, then on top of that traffic enforcement giving you hand signals on which way to go. Then you’ll understand why you’ll never see because without operators anytime in the forseeable future Let alone be a required standard feature. Another key area is security although I won’t get into it. Anything fully autonomous will be blocked from large blocks of areas like flying drones in Washington DC. You might not know they did experiment with fully autonomous delivery robots in the past for. Delivering packages. I remember the big fanfare, but I guess it didn’t work out.
With the system currently available in the cars like with the Tesla they’re telling you you have to be ready to take over. They’ve been removing text which lead you to believe that the vehicles might be autonomous. Meaning you must keep your Situational awareness at all times. I know even with my newer vehicles I really get a chance to use my cruise control because there is just too much traffic to maintain safe spacing.

While some of those situations might be difficult for an autonomous car .. they're also really difficult for many clueless drivers, so is it really any worse? And the AI cars will get better .. the real drivers not so much.

...changing directions only after it bumps into something. That would leave a lot of dented cars along the side of the road.[emoji1]

Ugh...my Mom used to drive that way and her bumpers were filled with scratches and dents. Thankfully, she stopped driving years ago.

Hopefully autonomous driving cars won’t work the same way your vacuum cleaner works... changing directions only after it bumps into something. That would leave a lot of dented cars along the side of the road.[emoji1]
That'll be the Ins Co's issue. ;)

The result: it was the computers' fault, so everyone's rates go up. ;)

What do you consider highly populated areas? Autonomous cars (with driver assist) have been in some pretty major cities - like DC, LA, Silicon Valley, Pittsburgh and many others.

NYC if you want to see madness go to midtown now. I used to perform there regularly. Literally one time it was easier/quicker for me to push the cart with equipment four blocks downtown then 4 block crosstown than it would be to load the van & move it. Most time 30 - 45 mins to go around the corner because with thru streets aren’t able to make turns. Then you have the traffic officers giving you instructions either preventing you or telling you to turn where you don’t want to. I am telling you you can’t make this stuff. Send the automated cars so I can count how many times the driver has to take control. I am in the suburbs and today I didn’t get a mile before being given directions by flag men because of construction which required eye contact on both our parts twice. During schools days I pass thru 3 to 4 school crossing guards same thing.

We'll have autonomous drone cars .. able to fly over the traffic .. :)

I refuse to do events in the city... absolutely NOT! Maybe in the summer when things die down a bit... but the holidays is the biggest nightmare ever.

My locations were in lower Manhattan near the Fed & 270 Park Ave. At the Max ,M-F for three weeks in December. We would drive in each day. The last few years we had a person dedicated to driving the van between locations when we had doubles. I had one of my vans with commercial plates a definite must in Manhattan to use loading zones & some loading docks. Commercial plates, dedicated van driver & careful got us though. Not sure if I could handle the stress both driving & performing now. One Friday I Performed at events almost 12 hrs then had to drive home while everyone slept. They were tired .lol

So I did some searching as to why self driving cars are not in Manhattan. It seems that Audi was the first to obtain permission from the DMV to do this testing .. and successfully tested 6.1 miles around the capital. Sadly, in order to do more testing, there is a strict requirement for a state police escort at all times, which must be paid for by the testing company.

A company called Cruise Automation (GM) was permitted to operate in NY only if they met certain conditions, including opening an office in Manhattan, hire drivers and passengers for all autonomous vehicles. They have currently leased space on Hudson Street .. and that's about all the info available. In a quote on thedrive.com, 'Self-driving cars are coming to The Empire State whether you like it or not. It is only a matter of time.'

While DC certainly does not have all the 5 lane one way roads of NYC, it does indeed have thousands of people and obstructions, to include detours at a moments notice, tons of traffic and 'different' road patterns. Miami, which is different from DC, also has pedestrians, bikes, etc. Pittsburgh, different still, also has people, bikes, obstructions, etc. Fully autonomous anything is not here yet - hence the driver assist .. but these vehicles are driving in major cities currently and fully autonomous is coming. The only question is when.

Testing doesn’t mean success, that’s why I said cart before the horse. And operating doesn’t means they operated continuely without any driver intervention. Ask them how this car will taking hand signals? Or will in the future? Seriously. I guess we have to go though this phase like car which is also boat and flying car phase. They did make both but crappy in both uses. Will take this up again in 20 years But if anything its all more feasible than the flying electric autonomous drone vehicle.

I agree - testing doesn't mean success - and no one has said they have a completely autonomous car yet. The only way to get to success is through testing. What they've all said is they are testing them in major cities .. and it's coming. As you already know, Uber is already doing it. Waymo is doing it. Google is doing it. Microsoft has their hands on it too I'm sure .. and others.

Things go in cycles. Example: electric cars - the electric car is not a new idea.

There will always be somebody that will look to take the cheap way out. That's because either they don't have the money to spend or just don't want to. There's no substitution for really great talent. When people see you're just that good, most won't hesitate and go with you. They won't look at a cheap option like that.

No the recorders you're talking about didn't come from the dollar store. Those recorders work great! Never had an issue with either one of them.

I’ve been streaming Apple Music for the past few days while doing work around the house, and while it’s pretty convenient just to have music playing without any interaction on my part, I must say; I wouldn’t want to rely on it for a gig. It’s not as reliable as playing the radio, but at least there are no commercials. It still cuts out occasionally and unexpectedly. I’m streaming from my iPad Mini over my home WiFi and connecting via Bluetooth to my home stereo. So the problem could be the WiFi or the Bluetooth, or Apple Music. Ya never know. But at least when I play songs stored on the computer with a wired connection to the stereo, it NEVER cuts out.[emoji4]

OK, maybe Walmart or Target, but still, to YOUR point, it WAS the cheap way out (and certainly not the right way as we discussed).

I've been toying with Apple Music as well but probably in a different fashion. Something I've been seeing across the interwebs is various people are seeing the music randomly pause (iPad, HomePod, etc). FWIW, Google Home is also seeing this with Google music. If this is what you're seeing, try moving these devices to a 5GHz portion of your network and see if that resolves issues.

Sorry you disagreed with me and what I did. I looked at the company that made them. The company is JVC. They sell good things and what I do is see who made a thing. When I see it's a well known company that I trust, I give them a shot. Like I said those recorders work great! Again we have never had a problem with them.
