To beat mix or not, that is the question...

If you are a club DJ, I get it. You need to beat mix an keep the floor full with slow breaks to let them get refills. But for the rest? When I was in the game I did mostly weddings and parties. Beat mixing was rarely a requirement so I never really got into it.

    Carousel

Is everyone enjoying their brave new 1984 world? The only reason why we don't have carousel yet is because all the politicians are past the age. Everybody that would get this would have gone to carousel.

    Mics?

With all the wireless mic channels being gobbled up, what's your solution? Honestly, I loved the freedom to be able to walk around a venue and basically speak from anywhere, but, have DJs become to dependent on that? Sure, I was speaking from "anywhere" in the venue but my speakers were where...

    Health and fitness

For those that don't remember, my fulltime job is with the Federal Government of the United States. With the whole COVID-19 thing I am working at home. Most of my day is spent in conference calls so that means that I sit, listen, watch screen shares on my 40" monitor, and give input. Most of it...

    Micromanaging Wedding Planners

Another reason why I got out in 2010 was because of micromanaging wedding planners. I get that it is the job of the planner to make sure the day goes well but some seem to forget that it is the bride and groom's day and not the planners. Now, funny as it seems, I am taking on the role of the...

    Same Sex Weddings

I had stated that I had gotten out due to the whole same sex wedding issue but lately I have been thinking about it. First, my outlook on homosexuality itself has changed. When I got out of DJing in 2010 I was going through a religious crisis; I didn't know what I was and I probably could say...

    Back into Weddings

It looks like I am back into weddings but not as a DJ. A friend's daughter is getting married and I will be her officiant. Back when I had Good Knight Entertainment up and running I got ordained in the Universal Life Church with the idea of using it as an add on. So, a few weeks back my...

    Hello

Folks: It has been a long time for me being here. It is not semi retired anymore it is downright done. I actually closed down in 2010. I saw the handwriting on the wall regarding same sex marriage and decided that since I am a Christian I'd rather get out than get sued. I still have tons of...

    It has been how long?

Hey folks. Yes, it has been a very long time since I have been here. It has been maybe a year. I have not touched the gear at the lodge in that amount of time and probably won't till a Bull and Oyster Roast in November. It will just be one of those "just push play" and mostly autoplay events...

    What do I miss?

It has been about three years since I shut down the business and there are some things I miss and don't miss. What I miss are: The planning. I actually liked working with the client to plan their event. Secretly, I hoped that they did not fill out the materials so that I could sit down with...

    How often do you shower?

I know this will attract a lot of attention. ;) Everybody have a great and safe weekend and for some of you a long weekend with Veteran's day. I'll be celebrating Sunday with a group of Vets from Perry Point VA Hospital. We'll play some Bingo and then do karaoke.

    Burger Bash (8/25) Play List

`I played the Burger Bash fund raiser at the lodge for Elks Camp Barrett. Well, played is parenthetical because I mostly monitored AutoPlay on VDJ. It was billed as a Country event but I allowed folks to request songs outside of country if they paid for the request. Here's the play list...

    Are you OCD

OCD = Oppressive Compulsive Disorder It can range from what faced Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets to a sort of perfectionist approach. I am at a mild stage. The money in my wallet has to be all facing the same direction and ranked from low to high. But, that, to me is being practical...

Court: Christians can be ordered to violate beliefs

The article is here: http://www.wnd.com/2012/06/refuse-to-photograph-lesbians-get-fined-7000/ It was just a matter of time. DJs, beware that you cannot tell a client that you are rejecting them because they are gay or you will get your ass sued off.

    Gas Attack

Yesterdays lunch included beef barley soup and last nights supper included chillie. Alone these are gaseous enough but together brought it to a new level. So, suppose you were at a gig and this hit you, how would you handle it? BTW, been there done that. When I could retire to the men's room...

    Gone Country

So, the conference committee chair of the MD, DE, DC State Association has accepted my offer to DJ the fall conference dinner. It will be a C/W theme so I have been listening to lots of C/W music since the Family Picnic on Memorial Day Sunday. This has gotten me to thinking, yeah, that was...

    My Memorial Day Sunday

We had our annual Elks Family Picnic at Camp Barrett in Crownsville, MD. My wife, nephew, and I had actually been there since Friday preparing for the picnic. We did everything from supplies runs to shucking corn (17 crates worth). Believe me, it is lots of work but it is fun work. Again...

    Request Station (Kiosk)

I know that Rick has a program and plans to build a Jukebox style kiosk. I seem to also remember toying with a program he put out that allows for a request station to be built. I was wondering if anybody has had experience with such an animal. Some KJs use them. The basic idea is that a...

    Making yourself memorable.

Jeremiah said in a thread that people won't remember the DJ. As indicated in another thread I had a call a few days ago when a bridesmaid of a previous client wanted me. Now, I do remember the client and the wedding and it was a kick azz time. It was a wedding under a large tent on a farm; a...
