Which do you like to use uplights or a light bar?

I've been replacing batteries in mine to keep them going longer. I've swapped batteries on 10 of my 20 fixtures so far. The rest are hanging in pretty well. The battery alone is $100, but it's way better than a $400 light replacement that nobody even has in stock.

I also can't see it. Looks like the video isn't set for public distribution.

What online music source do you use when someone request a song at an event you're doing that you don't have?

When you click add, you're generally going to be adding the song to a playlist that you are creating. So you may need to start by creating a playlist first. You also need to make sure you enable Beatsource in your DJ Software. Then to download the file for offline use, you drag the song to...

For You Line Array folks - Adele - One Night Only

I'm sure for real sound guys its no biggie... but just getting the delay right with those speaker stacks would be so important. In my very mild reading on pro-sound spaces, the big guys seem to really like L'Acoustics.

I'm trying Beatsource Link Plus tonight. It's pretty freaking cool...

What online music source do you use when someone request a song at an event you're doing that you don't have?

I've got a buddy that used Beatsource Link recently and really liked it. You can store 1000 of their songs for offline play, and if you have wifi access you can also download direct during a gig. I think I'm going to try it to see how it works for me. But as others have said... 1) Record...

    What's in your wire kit?

I use a plastic bin for all of my cables. It's easier for me to stack things on top of it when it's loaded on my cart. And anyone with OCD would probably have a panic attack looking at the condition of that bin during the busy season. I have a bunch of different length XLR cables: Short 10...

    How much fabric to scrunch?

This might be primarily a question for @djtaso as I'm not sure how many others are running totems. But I wanted to ask in a forum anyway since it might help others. How much extra fabric do you buy for your truss scrims to get the scrunchy look? I've got a 2 meter truss (6.5 ft), and currently...

How many have recovered in this DJ business from the Pandemic?

So looking at the numbers last night. Unless something happens to my last 3 gigs in December I'll be above 2019 top line by ~$3-5K.

Would you DJ an event on Christmas Day?

I can't imagine someone would want to pay what I'd want to work on Christmas, but I'll similarly say that I imagine that number is out there. That being said... I would want the gig to be fun. I'm not signing up to listen to karaoke or do a small house party unless it was for very close friends...

    Best Bang-for-Buck Lighting Upgrades?

Programming. I'm not familiar with QLC, and maybe you've already programmed shows you love. But I find that most DJs do the bare minimum, or nothing, when it comes to running their lighting rigs. When I'm programming I like to watch videos of some EDM stages to get inspired by color...

    LED par cans advice

I use the Chauvet SlimPar Hex-4s as my main pars or wash lights. They are quite bright for a small package, but having the white and amber LED inside them lets you do more natural lighting looks if you're not trying to do crazy colors. I'm sure the knock offs can do similar stuff without the...

Which DJ Facade Do you like more?

Not to speak for Ricky, but this is Top of the Town. It's in Arlington and looks right down the National Mall sightline. The CEB building and Key Bridge Marriott have similar views (not QUITE as good), but Top of the Town has condo owners basically right under their dance floor which forces...

How many have recovered in this DJ business from the Pandemic?

I did 7 weddings in October personally. That's busier than I really want to be. I'm doing some AV work this week for a gala event, and another wedding Saturday... then I finally get a break. Looking forward to a little down time.

Feeling like our work is appreciated never gets old. Good job, and I hope you continue to build upon it.

    Sweet 16

It would depend on the structure of the meal for me. If you're doing heavy hors d'oeuvres where you expect small plates and guests to be fairly transient in how they move around the room... you can get away with more high top tables and less seating. If you're serving a meal, I think it's a...

Your prediction on this business in the next few years

I also think there is a distinction between being great on the mic, and being a good facilitator. It's almost clockwork that when I tell a couple that toasts are coming up in 5 minutes they ask for a break to use the restroom. Or you get ready to do something and realize one of the parents has...

Weddings Some DJs Have QUIT Doing Weddings And I Understand Why

I understand the frustrations that he explains. But, as most here probably know about me at this point, I'm far more in the opposite camp. I'd rather reject every easy birthday party, anniversary party, and other low-stress gigs to focus exclusively on long-day, high execution risk, needs to be...

Your prediction on this business in the next few years

Having an opinion is never something you should be bashed for. But for that to be true, we have to be providing something so basic that a spotify playlist and bluetooth speaker is adequate enough to replace the DJ. And for a DJ doing that type of work and no more... you might be right. If our...

Your prediction on this business in the next few years

I've probably interacted with you on one board or another for the past 8-10 years at this point. Not once has a question like this come up that you've ever had a positive response. You're the Eeyore of DJs when it comes to outlook on the world. I think, like I often do, that talented people...

Have you raised your prices in the last year?

Talking through it in this thread gave me enough clarity on what I want to do. I changed my website earlier today, and sent the new pricing to an inquiry that came in today. It always feels better once you get a booking at the new rate. Hopefully one will come through soon.
