    Looking for Battery Powered Gear

Wanted to chime in on battery powered speakers. I've had the Bose S1, still own the Everse8 and now own the QSC CB10. The Everse is miles better than the Bose and the CB10 is miles better than the Everse8. The Everse12 is too bulky and sounds like sh!t. Just my opinion. If it were me, I'd go for...

    New mixer from Phenyx Pro

I just got in a Phenyx Pro PTL-800 mixer and thought I'd share my initial review. Keep in mind, I haven't even powered this up yet. Just commenting on the features. Phenyx is what I'd consider a "cheap chinese knock-off" vendor, but I've been using their wireless mics for 2.5 years now. Got one...

New speakers from QSC announced today

My opinion, the Everse 12 sounds crappy and weak and the box is way too bulky. I own an Everse 8. Excellent unit and small size. The mixer app is beautiful. I just bought the CB10 a few weeks back. It's just a bit larger than the Everse 8. Sounds much better and much louder. The mixer app is...

    Battery powered speakers

Been a while, thought I'd chime in on a new purchase and compare it against competitors. Let's talk battery-powered speakers. I've owned the Bose S1 Pro. It's a good unit, no iOS app. I used one for ceremonies and cocktail hours for several years. Very solid choice although a bit weak. Next up...

    EV Evolve 70 review

I was in Guitar Center the other day and got a few minutes to check out the Evolve 70. In short, I was not impressed, at all. The 70 has a 15" sub in it and the cabinet is HUGE. I figured it was an 18. I didn't try to pick it up but specs say it's 78 lbs and the cabinet is probably too big for...

What are photographers in your area getting relative to DJs?

It's called "portion control". Without it, the first people pile their plate high and usually waste a bunch of it. To counter, you have to cook much more food, which also increases the cost to the client. My clients love having our people control portion sizes.

What are photographers in your area getting relative to DJs?

I'll 2nd that. Our caterer normally dips the food onto the guests' plate. This past wedding was a mexican bar, so he decided to let the guests dip their own. He was entirely stressed out that we'd have enough food, given the first half piled their plates high. My view, it's never good to have a...

    Questions about stick speakers?

Not buying it. You spend $2.5k on a speaker, it should d#%n well have a cover with it.

What are photographers in your area getting relative to DJs?

$15 per person is what I'm paying to my outside caterer. For drinks, they supply water & tea. If clients want soda, it's on them.

What are photographers in your area getting relative to DJs?

I guess I'll say "thanks". ;) FWIW, most of my all-inclusives end up around the $10k mark for 100 people. Incidentally also, there is a local competitor who's about 45 minutes away. Their venue is much nicer than mine and much larger. They're advertising their "successful wedding venue" (their...

This is one of the funniest things that has happened since I have been a computer DJ.

I use an external HD to sync my machines. I have a .bat file setup to use RoboCopy on machine #1. I then connect the HD to the 2nd machine and use another Robocopy command to copy the updated director over to the 2nd machine. Not sure if you'll have to reindex VDJ or not. I'm guessing you will.

What are photographers in your area getting relative to DJs?

My take is photogs get roughly double what DJs make. $1k-$1.2k for DJs and $2k-$2.5k for photogs, at least around the Birmingham area. It was roughly the same in Nashville.

    Yep

I offer regular payments but so far I've only had a single client want regular payments. Practically all of them will gather up $1000-$3000, then ask me to send them an invoice. My only condition is that the balance is paid off and we have final guest count and food choice done at the 30 day...

    Yep

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking as well. Booking season has apparently already started as I'm seeing a steady stream of leads come in. I'm going to try $1000 off or $500 off a one-day rental and see what happens.

    Yep

You got me to thinking over my profit margin. Here is what a basic, all-inclusive package runs me: This is an $8,500 package for 50 people. I do not have any cost in there for my DJ service. Now that I'm looking it back over, $6,770 seems excessive and maybe it's why my bookings have dropped...

    Yep

Good advice, thank you. For now, I'm going to keep the drapery. I get lots of compliments on it and have yet to have a bride who wanted it removed. On the food, I'm already getting it for $15/pp and resale it at $25/pp. It makes a substantial profit for me. My son is primary photog but I do have...

I own about 45 acres, 2 houses, plus the venue building. I pay about $3k per YEAR in property taxes. When I hit 65 that will go to about $300 per year.
  18. rickryan.com

    Yep

I don't mind. My first year, I ended up with something 32, but keep in mind I was grossly under-priced and was taking anything I could get (not just weddings). After I started doing nothing but weddings, I did 10 events that year and the next. This was at a $6500 price point for the...

Growing their client base is precisely my job, and I'm doing it very well. That's why they want to keep me around. Talent often thinks (wrongly) that promotion is exclusively the job of the club owner. It's not. As talent, I'm supposed to be pushing the club and bringing in new clientele. I'm...

    Yep

My comment is "sufficient" means I keep getting invited back the next week. Exceptional means I'm growing their client base (which I am). I currently run 30+ singers with a high of 45. Things are going well and I don't have to re-sell a new gig every night. Just show up, setup and do a good job.
  21. rickryan.com

    Yep

No, it's not the same. I show up twice per week. As long as I do a sufficient job, I keep my job. One-off gigs (weddings) happen exactly one night at a time. They are completely different.

    Questions about stick speakers?

BTW, speaking of covers, EV makes a padded cover with wheels. What I don't get is why they didn't include padded pockets to hold the stick portion of the speaker. You still have the separate bag, which then has to be balanced. Why in the world did they not make a place for the sticks to go into...

    Questions about stick speakers?

Not true. The mixer doesn't have as many channels as my 50 but it still has 2 mic/line channels along with a stereo channel plus a channel for bluetooth. My 50 has 4 mic/line inputs. I can't understand why the newer units would have less channels. I'm also with Bob that it irks me they don't...

    Yep

A standing karaoke gig and one-off events are two completely different animals. My karaoke gig is on Wednesdays and Fridays, neither of which typically interfere with higher paying gigs (weddings), plus it adds roughly $25k per year to my income. Now if I were accepting $300/night for weddings...

    Questions about stick speakers?

Has anyone here heard the new QSC KC12 stick systems? Looks like it's the same price as my EV Evolve 50m, yet the specs show quite a bit difference in volume: QSC KC12 - 132 max SPL EV Evolve 50m - 127 max SPL That's a big difference.
