And the "birthday party" with all the new gear in the park was supposed to be for "exposure" .. how far did that get you?

Mix...you didnt really openly admit to doing this for "exposure" did u?...its the "magic beans" of our era

Mix, you make these things FAARRRRRR more complicated than they need to be.

Bring your own controller and plug into the "system" .. save your back and time. And I'm sure their gear won't be what makes you look bad.
You don't know what he got 2 years ago. People that weren't there even heard how horrible it was.

He's just plain cheap. I get that it's a memorial for his son that died 2 weeks after his 12th birthday from a form of Cancer.

Do you? Because cancer treatment is not cheap. This isn't the first year that you've posted about this event, and this isn't my first time commenting about this event. But for the love of God, the man lost his SON and you're bitching about $50 that you're not getting paid.

Now this guy does his yearly thing of crying about how he's hurting for money to do this event. He doesn't know I know where the money comes from to do this event. He's on the board that puts on the African American Heritage Festival every year in Wheequaic Park every year on the weekend of Memorial and Labor day weekends. So he's not there not getting paid something to put this event on. The city of Newark has a seperate fund that goes for him to put this event on. He doesn't know that I know all of this and I won't say a thing because it's none of my business. My thing is just pay us.

Don't be an asshole. So what if he's a board member? Lots of people volunteer their time, or are appointed to serve on the boards of charity organizations because they're leaders who can deliver results. That doesn't make them rich, nor does it mean they have unlimited funds to put on events that benefit those organizations. You might as well just call the guy out on his antics if it bothers you that much. I'm sure if he had a choice between throwing a memorial party in his son's memory or trading everything good in his life in exchange for getting his son back, he'd make the trade.

I really wish the guy would see the things you say about him. Step up and support the cause, or politely step off. The event is free to attend and people seem to enjoy it (or else it wouldn't be happening for the 14th year in a row). Everyone else: this is the event that Mix is demanding more money for.

RIP, Shakil Williams

Like I said we're at the bare minimum for doing this event. If he wants someone to do it for less than the price we do it for than he can have at it. He just needs to remember what happened the last time he did that and what he got.
If it truly is about 'the exposure and gas money', then you are certainly not at your bare minimums.

The interesting thing is that we saw from pictures from last year there were way more people there than at your recent Birthday party which was done for free. Although I’m not privy to what dollars are involved but if is memorial or fundraiser you can bet there isn’t ton money involved. Especially on a event like this where it’s free to attend. If anything this is the type of event you work with the people for the exposure and that they are paying is plus. I’m willing to bet anyone running a legitimate company would help out on this type of event (if they had the time) and not make an issue of a small amount such as $50.

All the discounts you give people and this is the guy you are going to stand firm on?

Plus you are looking at it all wrong. The question isn't if he can afford it or not. The question for him is can he find someone else for that price. I'm guessing he can
The question for you is can you find another gig that you don't have to bring equipment to on that day that can pay more? Or any gig?

We just got a call about a birthday party for a Saturday in September. We were way too expensive for what this guy was looking to spend. I wished him luck. I'm sure he'll find someone. He very well may be well off and just doesn't see the value in a good DJ. Not everyone is my customer

Steve what you said sounds great but there's a catch to it. We know him too well. He won't cut us out of the deal this year. He's going to pay us our price for this year. His aim is for next year. The person he's getting to supply the gear wants to get on his non profit status so he can get in good to do his own events to save money or where he can get things done for free.

So his aim is to cut us out for next year and have them do it for free. If not that find another DJ to do it for less than the price we're doing it for. That's fine with us. Whether someone brings in the gear themselves, for the sound, our price doesn't change for us to be the DJs working the event. Anyhow the event will be the last Saturday in August whatever date that is. He does it that way every year.

The bottom line is that other person can do it for free but we certainly won't.

That's not really how a non-profit organization works, dude.

The pay is a lot more than $50 and like I said the city has a fund setup for this every year and trust me it's not pocket change.

I have no problem with him getting a decent amount of money to put in his pocket. Just treat us nicely. This is not our first time doing this event for him and he knows the quality he gets with us doing it. He's just a person looking to see how he can always get over. He's just looking to setup for someone to do it for free. It's sad but true. Also need to say that there's a cost to be a vendor there and him not having to pay for the permit.

Are you sure he "knows the quality he gets with us doing it"?

If he offered to pay you the same amount AND had someone else bring in the gear, maybe there are some areas he didn't feel he WAS getting the quality HE expected. Seems like if he wanted to fleece you, he would have asked you again to bring the gear and asked for a cut in pay.

I'm so tempted to reach out to the guy myself and tell him what you've told us, just in the name of decency, but this is a private board. Why should he treat you nicely when you're saying such kind things about him here?

Like I said we've done this event for several years. So if he felt that way he wouldn't have us keep coming back to do the event. I said it correctly. He just looks at cutting corners wherever he can. Then when things backfire he comes back to ask me will I do the event again. So that should say something. You don't keep coming back to get somebody to do something unless you're happy with their services.
